A Slavic-Inspired Fantasy Novel with Elements of Mystery and Romance

Those beautiful eyes, shining the light of silver.

Oldřich Lýnhart, the King of Lemaria, hires a group of hunters to dispatch a monster, hidden deep in the forests of Podkray. Salvyra, a girl of seventeen, finds herself at one end of the conflict – she who loves that monster; she who would die for that monster; she who would kill for that monster. That monster is none other than Vilod, a veritable artist and saint, whose only sins are his disfigured looks and divergent nature. The group of hunters, called the Seílgars, care not for a monster's personality. Quick to judge, they have only one thing in mind. Extermination.

Referin Tállier, a member of the Seílgars, stands in the middle of it all. After being unable to prevent a tragedy, Referin starts questioning the nature of things. Not fate but choices bring Salvyra and Referin together. Pelted by dangerous creatures, moral conundrums, and encounters with eccentric characters, the two of them end up sharing everything; personal growth, moral ambiguity, and a determination to keep moving. Despite the obstacles. And to the end.

PROLOGUE

Oldřich Lýnhart, the King of Lemaria, approached the balustrade of his terrace, the hem of his long robe billowing in the afternoon wind. He sighed, rested his hands atop the railing’s cold surface, and gazed into the distance.

A dark forest of spruce and pine stretched as far as he could see, all the way up to the Slazicy Mountains encircling the enormous valley. To the west, swift currents of the River Wesna ran between wooded hills and rocky outcrops, sparkling like woven strands of silver. In the middle of the valley, huge plains stretched in all directions, dotted with small settlements and towns, built on the Karina’s and Pavlína’s many banks. The partially-clouded sun had reached the high horizon, lending the world a meek, orange hue. The peaks of the distant massif were coated with snow, shimmering in the dying light like foothills of heaven. Cold wind rustled Oldřich’s hair under the heavy crown on his head.

Yet the crown was not the heaviest burden he bore.

He shifted his gaze down at the courtyard. Amidst trimmed shrubs, flowerbeds of lilies, and pebbled pathways, Mokva and Varimiř were holding a child’s competition, splashing each other with water from an intricately carved stone fountain in the centre of the yard. The fountain comprised a squat plinth, on which a statue of a young man stood proudly, holding up a horn and blowing through it with inspiring vigour. Mokva was making circles around the fountain, trying to catch Varimiř, who was giggling and blowing raspberries at her. She finally caught him and tossed him into the fountain. The boy looked as though he would cry, but he burst into laughter instead and pulled his sister into the fountain to join him. They splashed in the shallow water like a couple of frogs.

Oldřich turned, abandoning the high terrace, and strode briskly into the half-gloom of his chambers.

The stone walls of his room emanated warmth and were adorned with numerous paintings and richly embroidered tapestries. The paintings depicted landscapes, portraits, battles, and crowded streets, and the tapestries’ deep and tasteful colour palettes juxtaposed the dull, grey walls. A large crimson carpet made most of the spruce floor, and the chamber held a small number of furnishings; a large bed, two nightstands, a malachite table, a small cupboard, and two linen chairs.

Oldřich sauntered over to one of the chairs, occupied it, and poured himself a cupful of wine from a sizeable silver pitcher, which was resting on the lacquered cupboard. He leaned back and began sipping the sweet-sour drink, listening to his children’s laughter down in the courtyard.

The post Top 28+ Epic Fantasy Books and Series (2023) Breathtaking Stories and Epic Battles appeared first on Joelbooks.

When most people think of epic fantasy books they think of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Published in 1954-1955, The Lord of the Rings is one of the first epic fantasy novels and remains one of the most popular. But The Lord of the Rings is only one example of this genre. There are many epic fantasy books, both old and new, waiting to be discovered by readers.

Epic fantasy books are a genre of fantasy literature that usually has a large, complex plot and setting. They often include elements of high or epic fantasy, such as worlds or universes where magic and sorcery are commonly used, and larger-than-life characters. They typically employ magic and different supernatural phenomena such as creatures to develop their plot, settings, or theme. The stories will also feature mystical beings such as elves, trolls, gods, dragons, and dwarves. The genre draws its main inspiration from real-world folklore and myths and will normally be rooted in oral traditions.

Hence epic fantasy novels often connected to historical fantasy novels, there are also contemporary epic fantasy titles that are worth to mention. In the following list, we collected some great reads from the past years and you will also find the classic epic fantasy series at the end of the list.

What Are Some Fresh New Epic Fantasy Books and Series?

Iron Flame (The Empyrean Book 2), by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

In this riveting installment of the Basgiath War College saga, Violet Sorrengail's journey transcends the typical bounds of fantasy, delivering a story pulsating with resilience and intrigue. Violet, once expected to falter, emerges as a beacon of tenacity in a world where physical prowess often overshadows mental fortitude. Her survival through the initial Threshing, a harrowing ordeal meant to cull the weak, sets the stage for a tale that is as much about inner strength as it is about external battles.

The real essence of the story lies not in the relentless physical trials, but in the mental and emotional resilience Violet must muster in the face of a sadistic vice commandant and a hidden, ancient secret that threatens all she holds dear. The narrative brilliantly captures the spirit of determination and the will to defy odds, making Violet not just a character to root for, but a symbol of enduring strength.

The Book of Men, by Jer’Bril Manning (2022)

I strongly believe this is one of those new epic fantasy books that is likely to be turned into a movie at some point.

The Heavens are boiling, as different species are about to start a war that can destroy everyone and everything around. Archangels, on one side, aim to protect humankind. On the other hand, Lucifer and evil forces are plotting to take humanity down.

Gabriel is next to fail and get lost in sin, leaving Michael stuck between his brothers and his actual mission. Although not part of the game, Gailen the Holy Knight ends up caught in the conflict. He has to partner up with a demon and a human in order to resist the fallen archangels.

The unusual trio must learn to live and work together. After all, one is a holy knight. The other one is a demon, and the last one is a lawyer. They have nothing in common, apart from a goal.

Will they manage to prevent the apocalypse?

Hell Bent, by Leigh Bardugo (2023)

Hell Bent takes you to the underworld and introduces you to a story worth a horror experience. The purpose? Stealing a soul out of the underworld.

In theory, it sounds simple. In practice, it is nearly impossible to come back. However, Alex decides to give it a try and take Darlington out of hell.

Forbidden to get there, Alex finds a reliable partner in Dawes, but they need to put together a stronger team of allies to get the job done.

You will be taken through an extraordinary adventure, a maze of different happenings that makes you feel like you are right there with the heroes.

Danger is always waiting round the corner, killing team members one after another. Alex knows that something is going on. If she wants to survive, she needs to confront both her past and her future.

History? Check! Adventure? Check! Plot twists? Plenty of them. This epic fantasy book will leave you craving more magic adventures.

The Daughters of Izdihar, by Hadeer Elsbai (2023)

This is the first book in The Alamaxa Duology, a powerful series set in a completely different world, far from what you might be familiar with, a world with deep inspirations from recent Egyptian history.

The book follows the stories of two women. Giorgina is an average bookshop employee with no future expectations. Nehal is an aristocrat, used to get whatever she wants.

While it may look like they have nothing in common, they do. They both support women and their rights, and they are strongly connected by a love mystery.

Nehal is married into a wealthy family, only to be able to cover her father’s gambling debt. But her husband is in love with Giorgina.

Both girls have superpowers that they are not fully aware of. Their lives revolve one around the other because they share more than just a destiny. They also share a man…

As they keep struggling to give women more rights, they realize that a potential war could start any moment now, bringing in even more challenges.

The Altar of My Fate, by Michael R. Schultheiss (2021)

Reading The Altar of My Fate is nothing short of an adventure. Michael has done an excellent job of creating the universe in this book while giving a clear picture of all the incidents. You will love the mature themes and adore this story simultaneously. The unique setting will catch your attention and make you eager to see how the characters use magical powers.

This book is a close relation and a fusion of Game of Thrones, and Conan the Barbarian. If you enjoyed these masterpieces, you are in for a real treat. This is the story of Rosteval. He was trained to be part of the warrior’s path, but he intensely craves going on adventures in unknown lands and being glorified

Rosteval creates a war band and, as the leader, goes on a journey in a formidable desert to fight the rising enemies. He is ready for mounting dangers but not Ghaitta, a gorgeous and secretive slave girl.

As the enemies increase, Rosteval must tackle an immortal foe and the impending defeat apparition. Can he and Ghaitta stave off disaster and get to claim the ancient Shaper Altar’s fateful power?

Witch King, by Martha Wells (2023)

Martha Wells has never been known to disappoint in her series, and I am confident this entry will be a page-turner. If you enjoy a well-structured plot with unique characters, you don't want to miss this book when it debuts. It is a thrilling story about family, betrayal, power, and true friendship.

Kai-Enna, the main character, is imprisoned in a water trap, rendering him hopeless, unconscious, and completely unaware of how time flies. He is a witch king, and he finally wakes up to realize a lesser wizard is willing to take over his magic and use it for their benefit.

With the increasing growth of the Rising World Coalition threatening Kai’s reign and the new changing world since his assassination, he is forced to regroup his allies and answer all the questions as he draws all his pain magic.

A Day of Fallen Night, by Samantha Shannon (2023)

This book will sweep you into the dreamland fantasy world with its intricate and epic storyline. It is carefully mastered with excellent plot twists and captivating characters who are out of this world.

I am a big fan of Samantha's craft and expect nothing less from A Day of Fallen Night.

It narrates the story of Tunuva Melim, who has for fifty years put in work to slay wyrms. She is a sister to the Priory, and as generations go by, they begin to ask about the purpose of the Priory following the non-appearance of wyrms.

Meanwhile, Sabran, the Ambitious in the North, has narrowly saved both kingdoms by marrying the new king of Hroth. Dumai has been trying to wake the Eastern dragon gods, but now someone from her mother's past is coming to overturn her fate.

Following the eruption of the Dreadmount, terror and violence develop. All these women have to find the power to fight tooth and nail to liberate humanity against impending danger. Will they succeed? Find out as soon as this book drops.

The Starless Crown (Moon Fall), by James Rollins (2022)

An enigmatic journey unfolds as they strive to unravel the mysteries of the past and save the world. This epic series is from the New York Times bestselling author James Rollins.

A talented student foretells a nationwide cataclysm, but her reward is a death sentence. Fleeing the unknowns, she chooses a side with outcasts such as a broken soldier he calls upon again to take the weapons he's forbidden to use and find their way back home.

Under constant attack by a variety of both old and new enemies, they must be vigilant and discover ancient secrets to protect them from destruction.

The Lost Metal (The Mistborn Saga Book 7), by Brandon Sanderson (2022)

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series is an adventure-mystery that explores political intrigue and martial arts. This is the seventh book in the series and one of the most awaited epic fantasy book of 2022.

Kelsier collected the innermost underworld crew, to introduce the ultimate heist he planned. Even with the greatest criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks like the eventual longshot, until the on the streets of Flushing come a girl named Vin, who completely opens his eyes.

If you are unfamiliar with Mistborn books, I want to encourage you to start reading the first novel, published in 2006. This great adventure from Brandon Sanderson will certainly hook you in to his detailed exciting world.

The Unholy Realm (True Privilege), by Karyn Darnell (2021)

This is the first book of True Privilege series. The story starts in 1897 and follows the epic adventures of Purity's family.

Purity is a brave heroine, who find herself always of the middle of dangerous events. Her dream is for a better life as maid somehow never becomes reality, she falls in love with the lord of Shadow Brook Estate, Favor Wisedor, but due to unforeseen events she slips into a new reality called “New Earth”.

This is a very entertaining fantasy romance book. I was fascinated by the brilliant blend of adventure, mystery, and romance in the story. Additionally the story is well structured there was a lot of background work on the side of the author. I also loved how Purity's character came through over the course of this epic fantasy book, and how her entire personality evolved.

On The Trail Of The Wind's Tears, by Lynne Armstrong-Jones (2021)

The story follows some warriors and two sorceresses who joined together to defend a brutal warlock. Guided by a powerful witch, they manage to complete the mission, but their success turns them into the ideal candidates for a new quest.

Sorceress Veras feels something unusual in the wind – tears. The witch has tried to send a signal that she needs help again. Veras is joined by her husband Nico and another sorceress Creda to face the new challenge.

An unusual force is now aiming to control the weather. Apart from fighting this force, Veras and Nico also have to deal with their marriage. While newly married, they are still trying to get used to this new lifestyle. It sounds like double trouble, but they are not willing to give up.

The Provenance (Astar’s Blade), by Joe Lyon (2021)

His lifelong, Almon has been aware that the Plum-Kilmer family was frequented by a ghost. For many decades, the ghost has continually cursed his family except for him. Almon thinking that the family curse is over, believes that he is probably off the hook. However, the moment the ghost shows up, it leads to his sanity’s strain.

Not being ready, he is taken to the mountains by his growing madness, where the ghosts are waiting to lead him towards his doom or save him. The book highlights the ancestry of gods, demons, and ghosts who brought about a defective world. This is a story of tabooed knowledge or the perceived forces that are designed to keep away from mortals. They are aware of being under observation and are also very powerful to curse audacious observers.

The author's first epic fantasy book in the series is a strong start of the Astars's Blade universe, with unique and unforgettable characters and plot.

Waking Magic (The Leira Chronicles), by Martha Carr, Michael Anderle (2020)

For those that like fantasy accompanied by some humor, this book is for you. You will not help being pulled along. The setup is in Austin, where a detective, Leira Berens, a homicide Detective, is going after bad guys and solving crimes. She is very good at her job. Can she solve a murder, rescue her mother, and also stop the ongoing apocalypse? She discovers that there are other worlds around her, sets out on a magical journey, and finds out that her mother is not crazy. Fortunately, she has a foul-mouthed troll on her side.

When the light elf dies, the king breaks an old treaty and seeks her help to find the murderer. The elf’s death is only the start, and tracking down the killer is not only about justice. It is about saving the world too. A lot of twists arise as time is limited too. She is also trying to hide the troll, which can grow to be gigantic. Everything is a real rollercoaster.

The Unbroken (Magic of the Lost), by C. L. Clark (2021)

The Unbroken is what modern fantasy should look like. The story is powerfully and thoughtfully written. The book is a political fantasy, a real work of art from the tale of rebellion, espionage, and military might in a crumbling desert empire. This is the first novel in C.L. Clark’s Magic of the Lost trilogy.

The story is about Touraine. A soldier caught up in between two different worlds. Touraine was stolen as a child and later raised to fight for the empire. Her only loyalty is to her Balladairan Empire conscripts. Now, her company has been sent to put an end to a rebellion in her homeland. Her blood ties may be stronger than she may have thought.

Meanwhile, Luca is a backstabber and desperate enough to be ordered into treason. She sways those that rebel into peace and is focused on getting her uncle off her throne. Touraine and Luca will fight over the nation’s price through massacres and assassinations. Some things are, however, not for sale.

For the lovers of epic military fantasy, this one is a must-read. It is compelling and persuasive. It reveals all the ugly, hurtful, and deep personal complexities of an empire revolution.

The Blacktongue Thief, by Christopher Buehlman (2021)

The Blacktongue Thief details an adventure filled with unmatched fantasy. The setup features a society with goblin wars, ravens for battle, and assassins that can use tattoos to kill. The story is undeniably a page-turner. Kinch Na Hannack has been educated as a thief and now owes the Takers Guild for his fortune, which is not limited to but includes knife–fighting, lie-weaving, lock-picking, wall-scaling, and also magic. Because of his debt, he lies in wait with a plan to rob the next traveler by the old forest road.

During one occurrence, he is awaiting an unusual target, Galva. She is a knight, a handmaiden of the goddess of death, and also survived the goblin wars. She is in search of her missing queen.

He is unsuccessful in his plan and manages to escape but now finds his fate entrapped with that of Galva. They face similar enemies and other unusual threats on their journey, like goblins and krakens. Honor is one thing they cannot afford.

The Blacktongue Thief is a total delight from its start to finish and is filled with crazy magic.

Bite Me (Shadow Guild: Vampire Bride), by Linsey Hall (2021)

In Bite Me, Linsey has created complex, deep characters filled with mystery, and their world is full of wonder. The book mirrors Mac’s life in Guild City. She is the Guild City’s guardian and barkeeper.

Mac is also finding about her prior life which seemingly, is not what she remembers. This is a story of a mighty hero and heroine and enemies turned lovers. It is a total mystery.

Mentored in Fire (Vampire Nights World Book 10), by K.F. Breene (2017)

In this epic fantasy book, Breene has creatively created a world that is dominated by natural and intriguing characters. You will be drawn into every moment. Surprisingly enough, that is where she finds herself having been rescued from the elves’ dungeon. She is in the Underworld together with her father, who is also full of mischievous magic.

While there, she is now finding out more about her magic and is now forming a bond with her father. Is Lucifer just deceiving her into getting what he wants? Mentored in fire is intelligent, fiery, humorous, and intensely touching. This series just keeps getting better.

The Savage and the Swan, by Ella Fields (2021)

Ella Fields’ The Savage and the Swan is a romance fantasy. You will not want to put this read down as the characters will remain nested in your brain. The book features two main characters, Opal and Dade. Dade is fierce, consumed by revenge, and dark, while Opal is delicate and full of grace.

The king of the wolves was a lot more than he seemed. He had been raised to avenge his parents, and his heart had been conditioned to hate and violence. Because of their upbringing, their characters are very much unlike when they meet. Their relations in the magical, supernatural world are exceptionally detailed to show how Opal and Dade’s destiny will foster the land’s peace and unity.

With this masterpiece, you will momentarily forget about the real world.

Anomaly One, by Rick Krusky (2020)

What would happen if the cure to a fatal disease was found and then lost? Moreover, what if finding the cure again could uplift a species to new heights or threaten its extinction based on who gets to it first? It looks into a futuristic world in the Princess’s journey to save her from a certain death in which civilization may be wholly extinguished.

Within a planet that exists in a remote system, there is an outburst from its overpopulated seams, and it has now been forced up above into the surrounding space. This has resulted in floating cities and collective cities called “the Conglomerate.”

A rampant incurable disease has caused much suffering, and the Conglomerate’s princess has not been spared. When a young man whose origin is of an unknown species undertakes to meet her, he creates events that offer a potential cure. While unaware, he hands over the makings of a weapon that can destroy the entire population to the Underworld. Will civilization be extinguished entirely?

Son of the Storm (The Nameless Republic), by Suyi Davies Okungbowa (2021)

This is the first book in The Nameless Republic series and the one where you get to become familiar with all the main characters. The action takes place in Bassa, an ancient city. Danso is a local scholar who is expected to achieve everything in life. But then, he does not really want it – he just wants a normal life.

His main passion is chasing banned stories and myths outside the city. According to the elite of the city, there is nothing really interesting out there. Everyone around – including immigrants – seems to have a secret though.

Things change when Danso finds a warrior wielding magic. This is when the story becomes interesting. Pushed into the dark history of Bassa, Danso is about to begin a journey that will change his life. Moreover, to make things even worse, chaos is just around the corner.

The Empire's Ruin (Ashes of the Unhewn Throne), by Brian Staveley (2021)

The general idea is fairly simple to understand – the Annurian Empire is about to fall. Its resources and advantages are almost gone. Some of its gates can no longer be used and the Kettral army is no longer what it used to be. Then, one of the remaining Kettral must save everything.

However, as you dig deeper into it, it becomes one of the best epic fantasy books. The surviving Kettral must travel over the edge of the empire and explore a new world full of dangers. The mission? Finding the nesting area of the war hawks.

Then, a plot twist kicks in. A monk who is now a con artist may know a few things that will put the empire back on track. Time is limited and every second matters. However, what the two will discover can change everything to 180 degrees – if they survive, of course.

The Shadow of the Gods (The Bloodsworn), by John Gwynne (2021)

John Gwynne has come up with a masterpiece – no wonder this is only the beginning of the longer Bloodsworn Saga series. It is a story that takes place in a different time – a time when gods warred themselves and almost became extinct.

As a result, the land of Vigrið is likely to become history as well. The world is different now. The hungry are always attacking, while monsters roam freely around the land. Gods’ remains still hold power and using it wisely can change everything though.

There is chaos everywhere and the world is expected to go to war anytime soon. Three people have a different fate though. A noblewoman, a thrall and a huntress end up teaming up to change the fate of the world – different purposes, but one common fate.

The Jasmine Throne (The Burning Kingdoms), by Tasha Suri (2021)

Malini’s life is not the best. While she is the dictator’s sister, she is imprisoned and ends up spending her time fully isolated in an ancient temple – the Hirana. It used to be a source of magic and power, but it is nothing but a ruin these days.

Priya, on the other hand, is a servant. Her role is to travel to Hirana every single evening to make sure Malini’s chambers are clean. She has an anonymous job, but she also hides a few secrets – as long as she can keep them away, she is happy.

One day, Malini discovers Priya’s real nature by mistake. Their destinies are then bound together. One of them is a princess aiming to take the throne back and the other one is actually a priestess trying to find her family. Their goals are bound to the same fate.

Empire of the Vampire, by Jay Kristoff (2021)

The sun was last seen 27 years ago. Vampires have managed to take the humanity over. It is a world of darkness now and things are less likely to change too soon. However, there are a few sparks of light out there.

Gabriel de Leon is what most people would refer to as a silversaint. He is part of a brotherhood and his role is to keep the church safe from vampires and other similar creatures. But then, the order has failed overtime and Gabriel is the only survivor.

Gabriel is now imprisoned and forced to tell the story that took the world here. There is one hope left for humanity though – the Holy Grail.

The Councillor, by E. J. Beaton (2021)

Iron Queen Sarelin Brey is now dead and everything seems to fall apart. The queen’s closest friend and local scholar Lysande Prior is meant to choose the next monarch. However, her hidden goal is to figure out who killed the queen – and she suspects magic was involved.

Lysande sticks to her goal in a quiet and organized manner. She believes that everything has a place and time. She is addicted to drugs though and as she digs deeper, an unusual will grows up inside her – the will of power.

She ends up stuck in a sophisticated game of strategy with other leaders in the city, but especially Luca Fontaine, an erudite prince. Meanwhile, in a different world, an enemy knows about the city struggles and aims to attack at the right time. This is only the first book in The Councillor series and one of the best epic fantasy books.

The post Top 22+ Sword & Sorcery Fantasy Books (In Order) For 2023 appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

Fantasy and sorcery books are often associated with kids, but this is only a misconception. When was the last time you left yourself in a warrior's hands to take you through a beautiful magic adventure? Anyone can get hooked in, regardless of the age.

Why Do We Love Sword & Sorcery Book Genre?

The sword and sorcery book genre offers readers the opportunity to explore a world of adventure, danger and magic. These stories are usually set in ancient times or in imaginary lands, and often feature brave heroes who fight for glory.

I personally enjoy the excitement and suspense that these books offer, as well as the chance to escape from my everyday live. Sword and sorcery books contain elements of romance, mystery and suspense, which make the plot even more enjoyable.

So why do we love sword and sorcery books? For the fans of fantasy including myself, they are the perfect blend of excitement, adventure and escape.

In the following list I collected some of the finest sword and sorcery fantasy books from the recent years, and I tried to order the reverse chronological order.

What Are The Top Sword & Sorcery Books?

Undaunted (Eight Book 3), Samer Rabadi (2023)

Eight, an old man in the body of an eight-year-old, embarks on a mission to hunt a transformed murderer, compelled by the death of Inleio, the former lodge master. Journeying to the city of Albei with his team, they're caught in a complex web of political maneuvers, challenges from the Healer's Lodge, and potential assassins. The tale stands out as Eight, while navigating these challenges, deepens his bond with his family and friends, reflecting his evolving integration into this world. However, his encounters also lead to considerable culture shock.

On a personal note, I felt perturbed by the way Voorhei is treated, and I found many of the organizations depicted to be distasteful. A missed opportunity in the story was the exclusion of Aslishtei's realization of her past connection with Eight; that would have added an intriguing layer to the narrative.

The novel is a gripping journey of pursuit, testing Eight's mettle against the backdrop of life, death, magic, and a looming shadow of the Long Dark.

Mark of the Fool 5 (Mark of the Fool Book 5), by J.M. Clarke (2023)

Alex, after demonstrating his prowess in Greymoor by summoning servants to counteract the Ravener’s hunters, delves deeper into enigma alongside a group of Heroes, his cabal, and the formidable Baelin. Together, they navigate the ancient Crymlyn swamp in search of insights, only to find that the Crymlyn houses ominous entities and the Ravener's more menacing agents still threaten Alex.

Mark of the Fool 5 offers an enthralling continuation of a magical coming-of-age narrative, weaving together action, humor, slice-of-life, and GameLit within a D&D-inspired universe.

Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series and eagerly anticipate the subsequent book. I'd urge everyone to give this series a shot. Admittedly, there were minor hiccups with a word missing in a few sentences, but these were sparse, hardly detracting from the story's overall allure and the quality of the prose.

A Tournament of Crowns (A Trial of Sorcerers Book 3), by Elise Kova (2023)

Eira, the protagonist, is plunged into an intense whirl of challenges following a controversial act of killing a man. Despite being viewed by many as a remorseless killer, she finds herself thrust into the eagerly anticipated Tournament of Five Kingdoms with little time to cleanse herself of the deed. Trapped with the other champions throughout the competition, Eira is confronted with several obstacles ranging from the deadly games themselves, relentless adversaries seeking vengeance, to the emotionally daunting task of dealing with the man who shattered her heart.

This series weaves a thrilling narrative centered on a magical tournament, layered with intricate mysteries and a simmering romance. Aimed primarily at young adults, the epic fantasy brings together themes of elemental magic, slow-burn love, the significance of found family, and struggles over kingdom futures. With its unexpected plot twists and an immersive world setting, A Tournament of Crowns promises to keep readers riveted and yearning for more.

Juvenile Tribulations, by Nathan D. Latrev (2022)

Juvenile Tribulations is top among the modern sword and sorcery books you should get your hands on if you fancy adventure stories packed with mystery and magic. Nathan engages you with descriptive scenes, humor, and excellent writing style to take you through the fantastic adventures of three allies in a world of deadly battles.

Different races live in Istharium- humans, dwarves, orcs, verdzers, and elves. Meanwhile, a young boy with his longtime friends, Firnael(an elf) and Gugnir (a dwarf) live peacefully and harmoniously in Edrios even after the Last Great War.

These characters love playing pranks, but they are broken off after making an unusual joke during a summer ball. The joke doesn’t sit right with their respective families, so the families disassociate them from being in contact.

Despite the thwarting factors keeping them away from their friendship, they find a way to reunite for an adventure. They are determined to find out why savage orcs are attacking travelers and other civilized orcs. They also want to find out if these events are linked to a tragedy that happened almost half a decade ago

You will love how this book creates a universe with different worlds and the fusion of different races and traditions. The prose is also excellently done to ensure that the different ideas are not overwhelming, even as you reflect on what solid friendship is about.

Mark of the Fool (Mark of the Fool Book 1), by J.M Clarke (2022)

Mark of the Fool has made it to the best-seller spot of sword and sorcery books, and there are good reasons for that. With detailed world-building, comedy, action, and magical science, Clarke fully quenches your fantasy thirst.

Imagine a hero who the gods choose, but he doesn’t yield to the calling. This is what Alex Roth does. Following his parents' death, he only desires one thing- to become a wizard. Due to his efforts, he gets accepted to the University of Generasi, a leading wizardry academy. But this is not the plan fate has for Alex.

During his eighteenth birthday, a prophecy marks him as one of the next Kingdom's five Heroes to wrestle the land's greatest enemy, Ravener. His mark is ‘The Fool,' the worst.

Instead of embracing the calling to die or serve the rest of the heroes, he refuses to accept the divine decree and leaves. Together with his younger sister, his childhood ally, and her cerberus, they devise a plan to flee from the university, hoping to solve Ravener's mystery.

You will love how Alex’s charm takes over as he makes longtime friends, learns mad wizard magic, fights mana vampires, and practices alchemy while trying to pay for tuition.

But there is a problem, Alex’s mark as the Fool prevents him from doing certain things. He can’t learn and cast spells if he enhances his skills outside combat, divinity, and spellcraft. Unless, of course, he masters how to exploit the mark. This book is intriguing, with unpredictable twists and turns that will glue you to the pages. Picturing Alex push through limitations will also make you anticipate this book’s sequel.

The Obsidian Tower (Rooks and Ruin Book 1), by Melissa Caruso (2020)

If you are into fantasy or you simply want a relaxing book out of this world, Melissa Caruso's work will hook you in after the first pages. Ryxander can save the world or she can simply destroy everything with a wrong move.

The world could end up in darkness and everything is different from her views. There is lots of intrigue involves, not to mention ambition and magic.

The Order Of The Pure Moon Reflected In Water, by Zen Cho (2020)

Guet Imm ends up working with some thieves and gets the mission to protect a sacred item. It all starts with a coffeehouse. She walks into it and everything goes crazy. The amount of excitement associated with this story is hard to describe in words.

It Came From The Sky, by Chelsea Sedoti (2020)

At a first glance, it looks like a small town from Pennsylvania has been invaded by aliens. Things can only go wrong from there. However, as you keep reading, you discover those are not aliens. Gideon Hofstadt is the only one who really knows what happens.

Sorcery of a Queen (Dragons of Terra Book 2), by Brian Naslund (2020)

Whether you are into magic, sorcery, fantasy stories or just face paced action, Brian Naslund's book will hook you in from the first few pages. Ashlyn is driven from her kingdom, yet she was supposed to become a queen.

Along The Razor's Edge (The War Eternal Book 1), by Rob J. Hayes (2020)

She is surrounded by all kinds of criminals, but she manages to find some allies, use some intrigue and let her ambition drive her. Her enemies will soon find out that it takes more than a prison to stop her.

The Bard's Blade (The Sorcerer's Song Book 1), by Brian D. Anderson (2020)

Follow Mariyah's story, whose life could be described as boring in Vylari. She has a simple life with no interesting events going on. The land is far from the hatred and fear associated with the outside world. She spends most of her time making wine, while the love of her life – Lem – is a reputable musician.

However, a stranger makes it to Vylari for the first time in hundreds of years. Things change for Mariyah and Lem and they need to face darkness on two separate paths.

The Fascinators, by Andrew Eliopulos (2020)

The book follows the story of three friends. Sam lives in a small magic town and brings back his old friends Delia and James to attend his graduation from the magic club. However, the senior year brings in some unexpected challenges, as their friendship seems to go cold.

Each of them has different internal challenges. One of them is in love, another one is bored with magic and the last one gets some sketchy friends. Sam understands that the common love for magic is now splitting them apart. Is there a way to fix this?

The Unspoken Name (The Serpent Gates Book 1), by A. K. Larkwood (2020)

The Unspoken Name is the first book in an upcoming Serpent Games series. It brings in the story of Csorwe, an orc who is about to be sacrificed to a god. However, she is saved by Sethennai, a wizard who sees something wrong in this kind of action.

As a thank you action, the orc becomes his most prolific spy and assassin. She decides to dedicate her life to find a missing artifact that will make the wizard impossible to defeat. Things change when Csorwe meets a young mage and her loyalties are likely to change.

Harrow the Ninth (The Locked Tomb Series Book 2), by Tamsyn Muir (2020)

Tamsyn Muir has approached an interesting idea regarding fantasy and magic. This book is a sequel to Gideon The Ninth, but the two are not that related. All in all, the author tells the story of a necromancer struggling to survive.

The story is quite intense and original. Get ready to discover a bunch of lesbian necromancers, insights of forbidden love and a magical world established in a haunted Gothic palace in the middle of nowhere.

Shorefall (The Founders Book 2), by Robert Jackson Bennett (2020)

Shorefall brings in an unexpected and refreshing approach to magic. The story follows the story of a small business that struggles to survive – Foundryside.

Owner Orso Ignacio and employee Sancia Grado are excellent at scriving, but it seems their skills are not enough to make it big, especially as massive competition wants to take the small business out. Things change when a powerful deadly entity is resurrected to join the business war.

Shorefall continues to be a compelling work of fantasy but not tightly plotted as the first book. Hence the stakes become higher in this new sword and sorcery book.

Stormsong (The Kingston Cycle Book 2), by C. L. Polk (2020)

Dame Grace Hensley lives through hard times. An atrocity has stained her place and she needs to face the consequences. She helps her brother Miles get the problem sorted, but the issue is far from being over. With no power and a harsh winter ahead, the land is about to face a disaster.

Grace tries her best to take her parents to a safe place, but unfortunately, she faces some obstacles and they are not that easy to overcome – a bunch of rogue mages and a powerful queen. Will the dame manage to save the land? Will her loved ones make it?

The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss (2010)

This is an extraordinary work of fantasy that explores the power of stories and legends to shape the world. Highly recommended for fantasy fiction enthusiasts. Anne McCaffrey describes it as magnificent, and critics note that while the author, Rothfuss, may evoke the styles of Ursula K. Le Guin, George R. R. Martin, and J. R. R. Tolkien, he maintains his unique voice and storytelling prowess.

The story begins with Kvothe, also known as Kote, an unassuming innkeeper, introducing himself as a legendary figure. He recounts his remarkable life, starting from his childhood in a traveling troupe of performers and his time as a street-smart orphan surviving in a crime-infested city.

He then embarks on a daring journey to enroll in a perilous school of magic. Throughout the narrative, readers are introduced to the multifaceted persona of Kvothe: the magician, thief, musician, dragon-slayer, legend-seeker, lover, and infamous assassin.

The Name of the Wind is an exceptional coming-of-age adventure that showcases the pinnacle of fantasy storytelling, making it an absolute must-read.

Homeland (The Legend of Drizzt Book 1), by R.A. Salvatore (2009)

I would never forget the lines of R.A. Salvatore during my long train travels, they just took me another place, a place where a dark elf warrior, Drizzt Do’Urden began his journey to gain his legacy.

Drizzt is a remarkable figure, emerges from a convoluted past that intertwines with his drow heritage. Being the third son of Mother Malice and weaponmaster Zaknafein, his life was originally slated for a ritual sacrifice to Lolth, the Spider Queen, in line with their matriarchal drow society’s custom. His older brother's sudden death, however, spares him, even though he remains vulnerable to his abusive sisters' torment.

As Drizzt matures, he gains recognition for his exceptional warrior skills at the Melee-Magthere Academy, but becomes disillusioned with the malevolent tendencies of his fellow drow who display unreserved cruelty towards other races of the Underdark. This contrast poses a significant challenge – can Drizzt uphold his distinct understanding of good and evil in such a merciless, unethical environment?

Homeland, the very first book of the 36 books series explores this intriguing origin story of Drizzt Do’Urden. Personally this was the series that hooked me into the world of sword and sorcery, so I strongly encourage YA and also adult readers to jump into this fascinating story.

Blake closed his eyes, fully expecting the end to come, but when the anticipated blow didn't land, he opened his eyes. To his bewilderment, he found himself standing again in that void's engulfing darkness. The flames continued to burn, encircling him in their glow.

“What is this?” Blake muttered. His eyes darted around, and he spun in bewildered circles.

“You're here. Good. There's not much time.” It was the same voice that had guided Blake before, the one that had told him to run.

“Who… who are you?” Blake questioned. His eyes searched for the source of the voice but found no tangible form.

“There's no time. It’s taking all my strength to keep you here,” replied the voice. It held a calmness, yet a hint of desperation could be detected.

As Blake listened, a glimmer of light appeared just before him. The light expanded horizontally, and his eyes widened as the light took shape. It was a sword, shining with a resplendent aura.

As the light slowly faded, Blake's eyes could now fully perceive the magnificent weapon before him. It possessed a unique and elegant design—a curved,

one-sided blade. Adorned with a brown wood-like handle. Unlike any Blake had seen before, the guard and pommel shimmered a lustrous golden, and he stepped forward to observe the blade itself.

The blade resembled glass, yet it held a captivating quality, an enchanting blend of blue and red hues that seemed to swirl like mist within the very structure of the blade, akin to a mesmerizing night sky.

Driven by impulse, Blake reached forward and firmly grasped the sword. It felt impossibly light, as if he were holding a delicate feather rather than a weapon.

Once again, the voice echoed in his ear, its tone resolute. “The Crystal Sword. A magic blade forged by the Istal.”

“The Istal…” Blake whispered. His voice filled with wonder. “They’re actually real?”

“Yes,” said the voice.

The void around Blake began to dissolve into nothingness, and the empty ground beneath his feet began to rumble.

“We’ve run out of time. This realm is fading,” the voice conveyed. “Use the blade to save yourself. You must not succumb to death. Find me, Blake. I have more to reveal to you.”

“How can I find you? You haven't told me who you are or where to look for you,” Blake said. The void disintegrated, and the dwindling flames extinguished.

“You will find me. It is only a matter of time…” The voice spoke its final words, and Blake felt himself leave the emptiness of the void.

The post 6 Fresh New Epic Fantasy Novels For 2023 appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

The unveiling of a new epic fantasy book is a momentous occasion, for it represents the birth of a new world, full of endless possibilities and untold stories. As we turn the pages and journey through the words of the author, we are transported to a realm beyond our own, filled with magic, adventure, and unforgettable characters.

Nothing beats modern fantasy these days. In fact, it looks like one of the most appreciated trends, and unsurprisingly for many, top releases often make it to the cinema industry as well. Fantasy novels go in more directions, though, and may float towards romance, action, or perhaps mystery, just to name a few.

What Are Some New Trends Among Epic Fantasy Novels?

Epic fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy that typically involves a sprawling narrative and complex world-building, and often centers around a quest or struggle against a great evil. It is a diverse genre with many different sub-themes and approaches, so it can be difficult to identify specific trends. That said, here are some fresh trends from the very recent years:

 • The inclusion of diverse and inclusive representation in epic fantasy novels. This can take the form of characters from underrepresented groups, or it can involve reinterpretations of traditional fantasy tropes and themes from a fresh perspective.
 • Focusing on character-driven stories and deeper exploration of psychological themes. Rather than focusing solely on external conflicts and world-building, these novels delve into the inner lives and motivations of their characters.
 • Darker, grittier epic fantasy, with a greater emphasis on moral ambiguity and the costs of power. These novels often explore the consequences of violence and the corrupting influence of absolute power.
 • Some authors have been experimenting with unconventional structures and formats in their epic fantasy novels, such as using non-linear timelines or multiple viewpoints.

It's important to note that these are just a few examples, and there are many other trends and approaches to epic fantasy being explored by authors.

With these thoughts in mind, here are some of the best new epic fantasy books for 2023, some of the top rated options to start your year in style, as well as my best recommendations for fans of the genre.

What Are The Best New Epic Fantasy Novels For 2023?

The Founders Effect, by A.A. Mbanaso (2022)

Disguised into an adventurous story, this is the type of book that will hook you in, but also give you a few lessons of life, such as trust or friendship. Reena, Mayzor, Cristus, and Leonnis established a new world order about 3,000 years ago. They are the main founders. The world has been through numerous generations since then. Everyone knows they used the Solar Stone to fulfill their mission and create the new world, but no one has bothered about it.

Old debt is never forgotten, and when queen Rhea decides to question Crissus about a debt involving king Narlyn, the monarch decides to increase taxes in order to pay. A messenger is sent over to the people to let them know about the new taxing system. The queen sends her own trusted soldier too, Ava.

Ava soon realizes that everything around her is not really based on trust. Unlike her expectations, it seems deceit is the most common issue around her. She ends up trying to survive in a world where women are not given too much consideration. As if all these were not enough, the other edge of the world is exposed to a danger that could destroy everything.

I think that this book is a great read for anyone who enjoys exciting and adventurous stories. I deeply believe in the importance of values, and this book touches on important themes of trust, friendship, and survival, making it an exceptional read.

The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi, by Shannon Chakraborty (2023)

If you have read The City of Brass before, chances are you will fall in love with this book. It is one of my favorites, and trust me, it will give you plenty of adventure. This is only the first book in a trilogy boosting adventure, mayhem, and chaos.

From sorcerers and pirates to ancient mysteries and long lost artifacts, there is a bit of everything.

But the book revolves around a woman and her last chance to find the glory she has always wanted. She is a pirate. She is known by everyone, and she has a terrible reputation. But her scandalous profile will not make her quit.

Amina Al-Sirafi has been through everything and has survived one danger after another. She has had a few husbands, and she was targeted by princes and backstabbed by everyone around her. She has even survived a demon, and she only wants to retire peacefully, close to her family.

Until she is offered a job. This is when things get really interesting, and adventure kicks in. This is her final adventure. She gathers everyone up for a mission that will secure everyone’s future.

But the deeper she digs, the more dangers she is exposed to. And she is not aware of it yet, but this could be her ending too.

I will stop giving spoilers now, but I believe my description gives you all the details you need to join the infamous captain on an adventure no one could refuse.

Untethered Sky, by Fonda Lee (2023)

I have been through quite a few books from Fonda Lee. After all, the author is an award winning fantasy writer, so this new release is definitely worth some attention, by far one of the best new epic fantasy books 2023.

I found myself in this book. To keep it simple, it defines the pursuit of obsession, which is something I do too. Sure, it is not as obvious, but if you look at the big picture once you are done, you will know exactly what I am talking about.

Anyway, back to the action…

Ester’s family has been through hell. Her mother was killed, as well as her baby brother. She was left with her father, who is still in shock and silence. She only has one wish now. She wants to find the ones responsible for the tragedy and kill them.

Supported by a roc known as Zahra, Ester finally finds a purpose for her life. She devotes herself to sacrifice her life for a mission that makes no sense at first.

Stuck in an unusual partnership, she ends up in some of the most dangerous parts of the empire, only to pursue acceptance and obsession.

The Tyranny of Faith (Empire of the Wolf Series Book 2), by Richard Swan (2023)

I recommend this book for an impressive cocktail of magic, intrigue, and mystery. It sounds like everything you need for new epic fantasy books 2023, but trust me, it takes you from one emotion to another like no other book.

The action follows Sir Konrad Vonvalt. He has a mission, and he has to do everything himself. He needs to investigate, make a decision, give a verdict and eventually execute.

The Battle of Galen’s Vale is history now. However, this was only a battle. The war is still ongoing. Konrad is concerned about some rumors, so he gets back to the capital city to find it close to disaster. People seem to go against the emperor, everyone speaks openly about anything…

He knows it is only a matter of time until everyone will go out in a revolt.

Things go even worse when the emperor’s grandson is kidnapped. Konrad must take on this mission. He starts a new quest along with a few allies far south, where he has to face the same issues he found in the capital city.

I will leave spoilers for another time, I am not trying to ruin it for you… This is all you need to know to get engaged into a story with numerous plot twists along the way.

The Jasad Heir, by Sara Hashem (2023)

Sara Hashem’s debut fantasy book takes you back to ancient Egypt. You have a queen, a deal that could win her kingdom back or perhaps destroy everything. In theory, you have everything you need for an action and mystery packed story.

A massacre ruined the Heir of Jasad’s family. Sylvia was only 10 years old back then. Five years later, she killed someone. As years go by, she knows that she needs to take her kingdom back, or whatever is left out of it.

When the current leaders track her down, her quiet life is likely to explode. She is great with magic, but magic has been banned.

When Arin sees her magic in action, Sylvia is given a deal. She needs to compete in a tournament, or she will face prosecution. To succeed in this tournament, she needs to boost her magic skills but without revealing her real identity.

Deep down inside her, Sylvia knows that avoiding prosecution means her kingdom will never experience happiness again.

Sylvia is stuck now, as she has to make the most important decision of her life.

She must choose between her new life, a life that she can actually get if she works hard, and a life that she has left behind. But then, that life equals a rising kingdom.

What path will she choose? This is the kind of book that sends you in the opposite direction as soon as you think you know what is going on.

The Foxglove King, by Hannah Whitten (2023)

Like I said before, fantasy books can go in a wide variety of directions. This one offers a more romantic approach, which is a bit unusual and perhaps what convinced me to recommend it.

The story is pretty simple in theory. A woman wants to raise the dead, but she ends up in an unusual world and has to face the consequences.

Anyway, let me make it clear…

Lore was only 13 years old when she managed to escape a cult. It has been a decade since then. Her life has changed, but she has always had one rule, staying away from that cult.

Morten is one of the most appreciated commodities in her village. Lore manages to survive with a plain job, but her powers are mistakenly revealed later on.

She is taken among some warrior monks, and unlike her expectations, the king gives her a mission instead of killing her. She needs to find out what kills entire villages. If she fails, she dies.

Lore goes through everything in an attempt to navigate her quest. She discovers religion, but she also gets engaged in politics. She even finds the love of her life, or at least this is what she believes.

However, her past will eventually catch up with her…
