Life in the Micro

Focused memoir on living in the moments with intention.

Some regrets don’t hit you all at once. They seep in at the corners of your life, at night or on a long drive, until they become a refrain. Those are the worst regrets of all.

I was living in a bubble, and it burst on May 9, 2022. It was the middle of the afternoon. As my partner Vanessa and I approached a major intersection, a blue car accelerated, ran the red light, and T-boned a black truck directly in front of us.

BOOM! The blue car’s hood crumbled like an accordion to absorb the impact. Within seconds, its front end was completely smashed, and its windows were broken. Then, everything went out of focus, except for what I needed to do—assess the scene for safety, check on the drivers of the blue car and black truck, and call 911. Nothing else mattered—I felt a heightened sense of purpose.

I had always focused on one macro moment after another—the next mountain to climb or business to start. I hadn’t spent any time appreciating the micro-moments—life in between the macros. I’d been living in a macro-moment bubble.

The accident awakened a desire to paint a complete picture of who I wanted to be and how I wanted to approach my life. This is my story of learning how to value the in-between and prioritize consciously living in the micro.

Read These Incredible Christian Memoirs and You'll Be Encouraged!

Christian memoirs remind us that we are not alone in our struggles and that God is with us through it all. Memoirs written by Christians often share how they overcame great obstacles through their faith in God.

These stories can be an inspiration to others who are facing difficult times. Christian biographies also remind us that God is interested in every aspect of our lives, no matter how small it may seem. By reading these memoirs, we can come to know God better and learn more about what He expects from us.

Why Christian Memoirs Are Worth Reading?

Christian memoirs & biographies are worth reading because they provide an intimate glimpse into the life of a Christian. Autobiographies offer readers a unique perspective on the author’s life, faith journey, and thoughts on Christianity. Unlike a book of theology or religious history, memoirs are written by someone who is living out their faith in the present. This makes for compelling reading, as readers can see how the author’s faith impacts their everyday life.

Christian memoirs can also be helpful for spiritual growth. By reading about how other Christians have dealt with difficult situations, we can learn from their mistakes and successes. In addition, memoirs often contain prayers or Bible verses that have been meaningful to the author. As we read these passages, we can allow them to speak to our own lives and grow in our own faith.

There are many excellent Christian biographies and autobiographies available today. These books offer rich insights into what it means to be a Christian and how to live out one's faith in a practical way.

What Are The Best Christian Memoirs & Biographies?

Wake Up With Purpose!, by Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt (2023)

“Sister Jean, the cherished matriarch of Loyola Chicago and a college basketball icon, shares her extraordinary journey in her memoir. Co-authored with Seth Davis, an acclaimed writer and broadcaster, the book interweaves Sister Jean's life story with her philosophical insights and spiritual guidance, resonating beyond religious boundaries.

It chronicles her experiences from teaching during World War II to her involvement in the 1960s college scene, and her iconic presence at Loyola's basketball games. The memoir not only highlights Sister Jean's centennial life lessons, humor, and wisdom, but also underscores the universal themes that unite everyone.

Engage with the essence of Sister Jean's spirit, offering a glimpse into the conversations she still enjoys with Loyola students, reflecting her ongoing commitment to guiding and inspiring others.

How I Learned to Like My Mom, by Dorenda Doyle (2022)

Definitely the type of story to impress and help you rebuild relationships with your loved ones, even if you actually have a good relationship with your mother. The book tells the story of a woman who loved drinking and married seven men throughout her life – a woman who was too busy to be a parent.

Dorenda Doyle has written one of the best Christian memoirs out there and aims to answer a few questions through her personal and emotional writing – can you love someone without liking their behavior? How about forgiving them for not looking after you?

The biography takes the reader through a deep story of abuse and neglect – helpful, but dramatic.

Affirming, by Sally Gary (2021)

There are certain things in life that simply do not go hand in hand with religion, and sexuality is one of them, especially if it implies same-sex relationships. The author knew she was attracted to women ever since she was young.

However, as a practicing Christian, coming out of the closet was out of the discussion. The book goes through all the feelings she had to endure in order to explore her sexuality, as well as aspects of her journey that many gay Christians will find useful in dealing with their families and those around them.

This Christian book is about courage, family, and love.

Good Apple, by Elizabeth Passarella (2021)

The author grew up in a conservative family, which defined her attitude towards life. She knows that she is complicated, but she is happy with it. Her mother? Christian. Her father? Jewish. Religion was a big thing, but eventually, she moved out of Memphis and ended up in New York.

Her brain pushed her towards politics – her heart pushed her towards religion. As she grew up, she went through a plethora of experiences, especially with her stereotypes from childhood. All in all, this book takes the reader through a funny story filled with chaos and all sorts of relationships.

It is a must-read for anyone who struggles to define themselves when growing up in a religious family.

Miraculously My Own, by Samantha J. Morgan (2021)

Trying to become pregnant and failing, the author had to see a doctor – she was given two options only. She had to take the in vitro alternative or simply give this thought up. There was a third option the doctor did not mention though – adoption. Was this a good option?

This story follows the couple's struggle to get a child. It is the type of story where God opens doors while closing others. Eventually, one thing leads to another, and the two end up in a Russian orphanage. This is where their whole world changed when they fell in love with Krishina and Yegor – two siblings.

In the end, the adoption was jeopardized. This book will take you from one emotion to another. You will be happy for their success, but then, everything seems to fall apart. However, God always has a plan, making this book one of the best Christian memoirs.

Born to Fly, by Sara Evans (2020)

A smile every now and then, a bit of drama, God's plan for everyone, and plenty of stories that everyone could learn something from – this is what the book is about. Rated as one of the best Christian biographies out there, Born to Fly will take you through a series of experiences – both sad and happy.

The author takes you through a bunch of stories from her career, but she also explains how faith has helped her manage her personal life. She describes some of the most challenging struggles in her life, as well as things that truly matter in terms of happiness and personal comfort.

This is the type of book that will make you comfortable with who you are and teach you a few lessons.

Clouds, by Laura Soblech (2020)

This is by far one of the most touching Christian memoirs out there. If you are after something to make you cry a little, then fill your heart up and break it again a few pages later, this is the perfect book. The author found out that her 17-year-old son only has another year to live.

Devastated, she released him to God. As the time was coming, she advised her son to start writing letters to those he loved – his friends and family, letters to say goodbye and express his feelings. But he had a different idea – he chose to write songs.

One of these songs – Clouds – became viral and showed him how small things can change the world.

Fear Gone Wild, by Kayla Stoecklein (2020)

The author’s story begins in a dramatic way. On a hot summer day of 2018, she lost her husband to suicide. He was a local pastor, so she found it difficult to understand what happened. But her life changed overnight, as she had to figure out why, as well as how to overcome this stigma.

She knew that her husband was battling depression, and despite all the prayers and treatments he went through, he could not get healed. She turned to the scripture to find answers, and she did eventually – it looks like God prepares everyone for a greater purpose.

The author describes some of her mistakes and aims to help people struggling with similar issues.

Walking Through Fire, by Vaneetha Rendall Risner (2021)

Vaneetha Rendall Risner ended up with polio as a kid. Unfortunately, she was misdiagnosed, so she ended up paralyzed. She spent the first ten years of her life between different hospitals, bullying moments, and sadness. Then, she became a Christian, hoping things would improve.

Unsurprisingly, they did. She ended up in college, got a dream job, and even found the love of her life. But then, God works in mysterious ways, and everything crumbled again – miscarriages, the death of her son, and even the possibility to become a quadriplegic.

The point? All the suffering you go through can be sweet as you develop a closer relationship with God.

They are powerful tools for personal growth and provide hope in difficult times. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to learn more about Christianity or grow in their faith.

Prologue

Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty.

And I should be dead.

If you like, you can consider what you're about to read to be a message from the beyond, my beyond.

It’s Day Seven of the Pain. And by Pain, I don’t mean a stubbed toe or “The Whole Ten Yards.” I capitalize Pain because this was the worst Pain I’ve ever experienced—it was the Platonic Ideal of Pain, the exemplar. I’ve heard people claim that the worst pain is childbirth: well, this was the worst pain imaginable, but without the joy of a newborn in my arms at the end of it.

And it may have been Day Seven of Pain, but it was also Day Ten of No Movement. If you catch my drift. I hadn’t taken a shit in ten days—there, there’s the drift. Something was wrong, very wrong. This was not a dull, throbbing pain, like a headache; it wasn’t even a piercing, stabbing pain, like the pancreatitis I’d had when I was thirty. This was a different kind of Pain. Like my body was going to burst. Like my insides were trying to force their way out.

Best Chick Lit Books For Women

The Way I Hate Him, by Meghan Quinn (2023)

Meghan Quinn's The Way I Hate Him is a refreshing deviation from the typical romance narrative.

At its core, it's a tale of revenge gone wrong, but what truly captivates is the electric tension between the protagonist and Hayes Farrow.

In a particularly poignant moment, Hayes pleads, “Don’t kiss me, Hattie. Please don’t kiss me. I won’t be able to stop you.” This raw vulnerability, juxtaposed with the initial animosity, showcases the depth and complexity of their evolving relationship.

Quinn's exploration of truth and deception, both in love and in familial ties, sets this novel apart. A riveting read that delves into the gray areas of human emotion.

Happy Place, by Emily Henry (2023)

Five months after their breakup, Harriet and Wyn find themselves sharing a bedroom at their friend group's annual Maine cottage getaway, a cherished tradition for the past decade. Despite the unresolved feelings between them, they decide to keep their breakup a secret to avoid breaking their friends' hearts, especially since this is the last time they'll be together in the cottage, which is up for sale.

Naomi Witt never thought she'd be known as Runaway Bride, but here she is. After an unpleasant couple of days and an even worse introduction to the small town of Knockemout, Virginia, she's now seriously reconsidering her life decisions, and her loyalty towards her twin sister.

I haven't read anything as madly exciting as Lucy Score's Things We Never Got Over yet. Her distinctive characters and laugh-out-loud humor kept me racing to read chapters as fast as I can.

In Five Years, by Rebecca Serle (2021)

In Five Years is about Dannie Kohan, a lawyer working in the financial sector. She is nothing like her best friend Bella, who is a real feminist and wild. Her proficiency when it comes to planning seems to have paid off since she nails the most coveted job interview of her life and accepts her boyfriend's marriage proposal in one fell swoop, nodding off completely content.

But one day when she awakens, she finds herself in a completely different apartment and beside a stranger. In Five Years is an everlasting love story, but it is certainly not the one you're expecting.

She has several personas to please her clients, but her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers that Jack Smith, the older brother of her favorite client, is the experimental physicist who ruined her mentor's career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere.

Jack is also the head of the physics department at MIT, where Elsie wants to land a tenure. Elsie is ready for a war of scholarly sabotage with Jack, but soon she finds herself attracted to him and starts questioning her guarded theories about love.

There Are No Men, by Carol Maloney Scott (2014)

Claire is separated from her high school sweetheart after a series of miscarriages. She is currently looking for a younger man who has no kids, doesn't have any kids at home, and doesn't wish to. She is now  looking for the perfect single man who does not want children and does not have any children left at home. She jets into online dating, singles events, and indeed hooks up a hookup from her gynecologist's nurse.

A number of constraints she imposes on her own life are leading her to alcoholism, but since this only makes her hyper-focused on high-heeled boots, these now seem pointless.

We recommend this cute rom-com for a summer afternoon read.

Best Women's Literature

To her Ghanaian parents, Maddie is Maame: the responsible one who takes care of the family, serving as her mother's stand-in and the primary carer for her father, who has Parkinson's disease. Maddie is the one who maintains harmony in her home, often at the cost of keeping family secrets. Living under these expectations and responsibilities, she has constantly been told who she is supposed to be by others, and now she yearns to break free and define herself on her own terms.

When the opportunity arises for Maddie to leave home, she is determined to redefine her identity. She aspires to be a confident, independent woman—one who wears a bright yellow suit, dates men that don't meet her mother's standards, and confronts her boss's microaggressions. She wants to be someone who is confident in her choices, not someone who feels the need to Google every decision she makes. However, when tragedy strikes, Maddie is forced to confront the potential risks and rewards of opening her heart and taking control of her life. This situation raises the poignant question: Will it take losing everything for her to truly find her voice?

Hood Feminism, by Mikki Kendall (2021)

How can feminists stand in solidarity with the likelihood that there are women who oppress others?

The present-day feminist movement features a striking blind spot, and contradictory, it is women. Rarely do influential feminists address the issues of satisfying basic needs as feminist. Mikki says issues like quality education, medical care, food insecurity, living wages, and safe neighborhoods are all feminist.

But mostly, the focus is on enhancing privilege for the minority and not on the majority’s basic survival. This refusal to prioritize these substantial issues only exacerbates the old problems of women rebuffing at carrying titles and conflicting discord. Many women have myopic feminism due to class, race, gender intersection, and sexual orientation.

The World Health Organization states that more than 264 million people worldwide suffer from depression.

But what exactly IS depression?

Is depression real, or is it only in the mind?

Is it a disease of the soul?

Is depression heritable?

Should you see a psychologist or a psychiatrist for treatment?

Should you take medicine or not?

Author Evelyn Rodas gives answers to these questions and many more in her book No, you cannot Just Snap Out of It.

This story is about the author’s life-long struggle with one of the most pervasive diseases one can have. Through her book, Evelyn aims to create the awareness that the depression most people know about has almost nothing to do with the disease that very few have heard of. And she shows proven reasons why it’s impossible for certain people to simply “Snap out of it.”

The goal of my book is to offer you the transformative wisdom and actionable steps that I've acquired through my own journey of adversity so you can fearlessly own your story, face your challenges, and make the conscious choice to grow.

–Sonny Von Cleveland

Hey White Boy, Conversations of Redemption is a profoundly authentic and moving memoir that delves into the transformative journey of Sonny Von Cleveland. Raised in a small town in Michigan, Sonny's childhood was marred by unimaginable sexual molestation, which shattered his innocence and left him grappling with profound emotional scars. Unable to cope with the devastating abuse, Sonny's once gregarious and outgoing nature gave way to anger and rebellion.
By the age of seven, he faced his first felony charge, and the downward spiral continued, leading him to prison at sixteen and again at twenty-one, resulting in eighteen years behind bars.

However, Sonny's path took an unexpected turn amidst the darkness of his incarceration. During 19 months in solitary confinement, he encountered a fellow inmate—a wise Muslim man—who would become his mentor. Through their profound conversations and teachings, Sonny embarked on a journey of self-examination, forgiveness, and personal accountability.

Sonny shares his remarkable transformation from victimhood to self-actualization and redemption in Hey White Boy. This memoir is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of letting go, and the capacity for personal growth.

Try as we might; neither I nor anyone else can change the past. Our past does not have to hold us hostage. We can’t change things said and done to us, nor can we undo and change what we have done to others. There is no do-over, unfortunately. What we can choose to do, however, is grow and take ownership of our mistakes and share our history and experiences to heal ourselves and others. We can also choose to forgive ourselves and others, and we can also choose to use our experiences to raise ourselves while giving hope and inspiration to others. We can choose to grow from adversity, and we can choose to let go of victimhood.

And that is what I decided to do when I left prison and here on these pages. I choose to own it all – the good, the bad, and the ugly, and I choose to let it all go and use my story as both a cautionary tale and a source of inspiration.

A True and Inspiring Immigrant American Dream Story Memoir

A True and Inspiring American Dream Story.

Suitcase is a compelling memoir that captures the quintessential American immigrant experience, told through the lens of an ordinary man who arrived in the United States with nothing but a suitcase and a pocketful of dreams. The author doesn't claim to be a high-profile celebrity or a wealthy entrepreneur; instead, he represents the countless immigrants who have journeyed to America in search of a better life.

The book serves as a roadmap for achieving success, detailing how the author navigated the challenges and obstacles that came his way through focus, hard work, confidence, passion, a positive attitude, and unyielding determination. It emphasizes that the principles of success he outlines are not exclusive to him but can be applied universally, making it a relatable and inspiring read for anyone looking to overcome difficulties and achieve their goals.

However, Suitcase is more than just a success story; it is also a manifesto for social justice and global well-being. The author delves into his passion for politics and advocacy, discussing critical issues such as voting rights, racism, diversity, women's rights, LGBT issues, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

He extends his narrative beyond personal milestones in his career and his daughter's education to include his commitment to helping the poor and feeding the hungry. The book is a clarion call for collective action, urging readers not only to strive for personal success but also to contribute to the broader health, wealth, and prosperity of the global community. It is a memoir that transcends the personal to touch upon the universal, making it a must-read for anyone interested in the complexities and opportunities of the American Dream.

A DJ's Journey through the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of House Music in New York City

The Beat, the Scene, the Sound follows DJ Disciple and his behind-the-scenes account of how DJs, promoters, fans, and others transformed house music from a DIY project into an international sensation—dive into the glitzy clubs, underground parties, and the diverse communities who made up the scene amidst the tumult of 1980s/90s-era NYC—between the fall of disco and the rise of EDM.

The book unearths many untold stories of the era. When house first rose to prominence in the 1980s, it brought people together—Palladium, Paradise Garage, Tunnel, Zanzibar, Studio 54, and other clubs were going strong. But as DJ Disciple established himself in the scene, he witnessed it shatter. During the crack-cocaine epidemic, he literally dodged bullets bringing his records to and from clubs at night. HIV/AIDS and homophobia threw up fear-based partitions. Then, mayors worked to close the clubs. House music was pushed underground and then abroad to the UK and Europe. Disciple and many other DJs sought to regain a footing in the United States, but that only became possible with the rise of commercialized EDM.

With dozens of interviews and historic photographs, The Beat, the Scene, the Sound shows what is possible when you bring people together and what can unravel when you split them apart.

INTRODUCTION

It was ten miles from The Empire in Middlesbrough to the warehouse outside of town. But DJ Disciple had just a few minutes before his set.

The roads were deserted. It was 11:00 PM on December 31, 1999. Most of the North Yorkshire locals were in one of two places: at home, wondering if the world’s computer systems and societies were about to self-destruct, or partying in one of the hundreds of theaters, community halls, industrial spaces, and pubs that transformed into dance clubs across northern England.

A light snow started to fall. Disciple had played The Empire with his fellow DJ and radio co-host Tony Walker earlier in the evening. They had formed the same bill the year before at the converted Victorian theater for a live set that aired on MTV. For that night in 1998, they had packed the three-level venue, so the promoters had it easy this time around. When word got out that Walker and Disciple would be headlining for Y2K, advance tickets sold out faster than they could be printed, and hopeful house heads gathered outside of the venue hours before the doors opened.

Disciple arrived at the gig with two aces up his sleeve: acetate copies of “You Don’t Know Me” by the up-and-coming Armand Van Helden and Frankie Knuckles’ remix of Allison Limerick’s “Where the Love Lives.” Both had driven The Empire crowd wild.

Now, Disciple had left Walker at the theater to head to an unknown location event. Word had circulated in the local house community. To get there, you had to show up to one spot where the promoters would shuttle partiers to the warehouse in question. The local fire marshal did not get the invite.

Disciple was riding on the kind of energy that only comes when you get paid overtime to do the thing you love. New Year’s Eve meant double bubble— otherwise known as double pay—and Y2K pushed those DJ fees even higher. Disciple could use the extra funds to compose new beats, cut new tracks in the studio, and eat three meals a day in the process for months to come.

Middlesbrough became a glow on the horizon. The snow was coming down harder. They passed a club-goer decked out in full party attire with his thumb out. There was no time to stop. They were driving too fast, and besides, there was no room in the car to spare with the other passengers and Disciple’s crates of records.

Less than a mile down the road, the driver failed to make a hard left. The car shot off the curb, rolled over and over down the embankment, and settled upside down in the ditch. Somehow, everyone was fine. Disciple jumped out of the car, gathered his records, and headed up to the road.

When the next car came along, Disciple didn’t stick out his thumb. He waved like he was escaping a hostage situation. The car screeched to a halt. It was full of more clubbers who, after seeing the crashed car and understanding who they were dealing with, immediately jumped out and helped Disciple pack his records in the trunk. Everyone squeezed in, and he promised them that everyone would get in free if they got to the gig in time.

The warehouse was just three minutes down the road. They pulled up to the side loading dock and ran through to where the sound system was set up. The crowd at capacity was making the %oor bounce. At the turntables, the resident DJ looked around, wondering if he needed to extend his two-hour set. When he saw Disciple, he nodded and got on the mic.

“Ladies and gentlemen, DJ Disciple is in the house.”

Disciple prepared his records and got ready to make the hand-off. With the resident’s last track spinning, Disciple carefully placed his wax on the vacant plate. He brought the levels up, and the crowd heard the words of Simion, the villain from Dexter’s Laboratory: “What is my problem with man you ask? No, I ask you what was man’s problem with me?”

The beat, sampled from Jaydee’s “Plastic Dreams,” dropped. Synths crept in. Duane Harden sang, “You don’t even know me.” The clock ticked down. A new millennium began.
