It's that time of year again when avid gamers around the world start getting excited for the release of the latest big video games. This year there were some hotly anticipated titles set to come out across a variety of platforms.

No doubt there are a lot of book lovers on this site, but we are part of the geek and gaming culture, so we felt it is a must to have a curated upcoming section also for PC, PS, Xbox and Nintendo Switch games.

I like to pre-order some upcoming game titles but being informed about the latest release dates from ad stuffed articles is a pain.

So let us show you our daily updated game release date shortlist (we linked YouTube game trailers where they were available). If you prefer mobile go to Upcoming.gg or scan the QR below.

What Are The Most Awaited Upcoming PC, PS Xbox and Switch Games? (Updated Weekly)

Why Are So Many Release Date Changes Among Game Titles?

There are several reasons for the recent spate of release date changes among upcoming game titles. One reason is challenges of video game development. Most modern games are developed for multiple platforms and because of unwanted bugs and challenges, there are bound to be delays as developers struggle to meet deadlines. Another reason is the growing complexity of games. As games become more ambitious, they take longer to develop and are more likely to experience setbacks.

The current generation of consoles has also contributed to the problem. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S or X are much more powerful than their predecessors, which makes optimizing for older platforms a time-consuming task. As a result, we've seen a number of high-profile games received lower ratings because of bad game experience in case of older consoles.

Final Thoughts on Upcoming Game Releases

If you are a nerd like me you will be also interested in upcoming movies and upcoming books releases too.

Minecraft has become a legendary name in the video gaming...

The post Top 8 Minecraft Books · Perfect Gift Idea for Little Gamers appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

Minecraft has become a legendary name in the video gaming industry. It’s one of the leading games out there and it’s available on all the major platforms, selling millions of copies all over the world. The open ended game offers countless options and that’s probably the main reason for its popularity.

It's so famous it's even built its way into the cinema industry and just like you've probably guessed already, there are plenty of books based on it too, both official and unofficial. With these thoughts in mind, here are some of the best Minecraft books released lately.

What Are The Most Impressive Minceraft Gaming Books and Novels?

Minecraft: Gather, Cook, Eat!, by Tara Theoharis (2023)

Building over and over again is not just repetitive, but hard work as well. Every now and then, you need a break, whether you’re celebrating a success or perhaps waiting for some weirdo to quit stalking your main door. This book gives you a bit of everything.

Everything is straightforward and easy to do. It makes no difference what skills or experience you have. You’ll discover some iconic dishes, as well as wonderful in-game recipes to impress your friends and allies.

There’s something for everyone in there. There are meaty meals, as well as veggie or even vegan meals, not to mention gluten free alternatives. Everything’s inspired from the vast world of Minecraft. Furthermore, you have snacks, as well as sophisticated meals or desserts.

There are more than 40 different recipes for all kinds of occasions. I love the creativity in this book and I believe it makes a good addition to every fan’s collection.

Minecraft: Super Bite-Size Builds, by Mojang AB and The Official Minecraft Team (2021)

There are quite a few similar books out there, some of them are unofficial. To me, this is one of the best and most exciting Minecraft books. From many points of view, it’s a guide. But for the more experienced players, it’s an intriguing incursion into a world where everything is possible.

No matter how experienced you are with Minecraft, there’s always something new to learn about. Or at least that’s how it feels to me. There’s always an idea you haven’t thought about, regardless of how simple and easy it seems.

This book aims to trigger your imagination a little. There are more than 20 new projects you can try out in Minecraft. I won’t give you too many spoilers, but how about a pig hot air balloon? How about a monster truck school bus?

Everything is intuitive and explained with step by step instructions. There are lots of tips and suggestions too and, of course, plenty of room for customization.

Minecraft Annual 2024, by Mojang AB and Farshore (2023)

This is one of the ultimate Minecraft books, no doubt about it. Coming out on a yearly basis, this year brings in more ideas, activities, builds, and challenges than any other. The best part about it? You can try everything in the game and trigger your imagination by customizing everything in the smallest details.

The annual brings in the hottest ideas from the previous 12 months. There are plenty of step by step builds and instructions, tips and tricks, thoughts and reviews, you name it. If there’s one thing I can complain about, that’s the fact it only comes out once a year. I could do with a monthly magazine like this.

Anyway, I have the previous releases too, so I’ll just take you through a quick run around what you’ll find in the annual. You’ll have a deep insight into all the new skins, as well as the legends. Learn more about the latest update, as well as survival challenges and treasure hunts.

There are also a few games to try out. If you ask me, it’s something that every fan will love, whether you get it for yourself or a good friend.

Minecraft Legends, by Matt Forbeck (2023)

Time to move on from the guides and ideas, this is one of those Minecraft books that will actually give you a story. Sure, all the graphics are based on Minecraft. You'll also notice the game's influence and references throughout the book. But the best part is the actual story, trust me.

Farnum has always wanted to run a zoo. He’s got a few animals and they’re pretty cute, but they won’t really make a zoo. He knows he needs something that will draw attention straight away, something weird and unusual. But then, he doesn’t like to go out and explore either.

One thing leads to another and he goes out exploring, only to run into a purple portal that takes him to a completely different world. And that’s where the action begins.

It’s one of the most detailed books you’ll ever read, not just Minecraft books. The story is very well written and brings in countless details and plot twists. If you ask me, this is one of those books that should become a movie.

Minecraft: The Outsider, by Danica Davidson (2023)

Definitely one of my favorite Minecraft books. It's a novel, but it's based on Minecraft. I know it sounds weird, but you'll see exactly what I mean. Jeremy is quite new when it comes to potions, he has never really succeeded at brewing one. However, he feels invisible.

He lives in a massive city. Everything around him is big. Everyone’s in a rush, no one ever talks, so he always feels lonely. Besides, making friends has never been so difficult. But at some point, his family meets another family. And they have a kid too, Valda.

Valda is far from what Jeremy hoped to find in a friend, being rude and treating him like a helpless baby.

However, this is the last thing Jeremy will have to worry about. It seems a new zombie species has turned up, ready to destroy everything and steal resources. Jeremy and Valda must forget about their differences for a while and find a solution to this nightmare.

Minecraft: Zombies Return!, by Nick Eliopulos (2023)

Bobbie has an important mission. She has already been through a harsh fight with Logan, head of the zombies. But he’s not gone and his plan is still in place. He wants to take the world over and to do that, he needs to build an impressive army of zombies.

Logan has already turned Bobbie’s brother into a zombie. Her goal isn’t to fight Logan, but to find a cure for her brother. However, somehow, everything’s tangled and multiple ideas revolve around the same general purpose, defeating Logan.

Then, the story takes us to Ben. There are quite a few connections here and I won’t take you through everything, I’ll let you discover the story. But somehow, Logan’s diary leaks out and that’s when things change. Logan’s plans are out, but who can stop the prolific zombie leader?

It all turns into a race. Zombies, on one side, trying to turn everyone into meat. Then, there are heroes, trying to save the world and themselves.

Minecraft: The Village, by Max Brooks (2023)

This is the last book in the author’s trilogy based on Minecraft. Sure, I recommend going through the previous ones too, although you can get a bit of an idea about what’s going on even if you don’t.

The plot is fairly simple to understand. Guy and Summer are about to face a challenge. They’re expert block breakers, but things take an unusual turn when their search for their way home becomes mission impossible.

Exploring the Overworld, they have to face all kinds of scenarios, deserts, and frozen lands filled with unexpected dangers. But then, they run into a community. They love their new friends and decide to settle in to find out more about them. They keep exploring around the village out of curiosity.

However, with so many monsters everywhere, they realize the village is in great danger. When one of the villagers vanishes, they start an investigation. And if you thought their exploration was the actual adventure, wait until you get to the roots of their investigation.

Minecraft Legends: A Hero's Guide to Saving the Overworld, by Mojang AB and The Official Minecraft Team (2023)

This is one of the official Minecraft books, bringing in a story that will impress you and your kids with the countless plot twists.

The Overworld is about to die. Facing destruction from the piglins, everything seems to slowly disappear. You’re the hero though. You need to gather a gang of friends and lead them in a battle against the cruel invasion. The more you wait, the less likely you are to save the Overworld.

This book will give out some impressive strategies, as well as building tips and tricks, fight hacks, and less known details about piglins and their characteristics, by far one of the best guides to help succeed in Minecraft.

Final Thoughts

These are by far some of the best Minecraft books you’ll find out there. Like I said before, there are plenty of different releases, some of them much better than others. As a fan, I’ve been through pretty much everything. This list will give you the crème de la crème of the Minecraft industry.

The post Top 8 Fortnite Books (Ranked) – For Serious Fortnite Fans appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

Fortnite books may not be your go-to loot, but just like mastering the game, knowledge is a weapon you shouldn't ignore.

No one can deny it, Fortnite has become a cult. It’s not just a game, but it’s the type of game today’s kids will keep playing 20 years from now. There will still be active communities and an impressive fan base, especially given the constant evolution.

Like any other successful idea, Fortnite has expanded further away from the gaming industry too. Whether you’re a serious fan or you want to surprise a Fortnite enthusiast with a great gift, here are some of the best Fortnite books you’ll find out there.

What Are The Top Fortnite Books in Terms of Gift Value?

An Unofficial Joke Book for Fortniters, by Brian Boone (2019)

From dad jokes and kid jokes to simple jokes and more sophisticated jokes, there’s a bit of everything in this book. What do a Fortnite player and a door have in common? They get knocked a lot. I know it sounds like a dad joke, but this is one of my favorites.

I bought this book for one of my nephews, a massive Fortnite fan and player, but I couldn’t help going through it myself too. Believe it or not, this isn’t just a small book with 50 random jokes. There are more than 800 different jokes in there, something to keep every player busy between tournaments.

I'll be honest with you, some of these jokes don't make sense if you're not an avid Fortnite player, but my nephew loved the book. It's suitable for kids older than eight and can give them something to talk about with their squads. Definitely a must-have for a Fortnite player.

Fortnite: The Chronicle, by Epic Games (2020)

Whether you love Fortnite or you know someone who does, this is one of the best Fortnite books out there. And if you get it as a gift, you’ll also make a good impression because it’s an official release, rather than a fan book. However, make sure the recipient doesn’t have it already.

Anyway, the title is self-explanatory. This book celebrates Fortnite and its greatest moments from previous seasons. It comes with a unique Fortnite hologram, which acts like a seal. It's the sign of original merchandise and while it's only a seal, it's truly attractive.

Back to the book, you’ll get access to all the highlights in the history of the game. Pirate invasions, volcanoes, the so-called Ice King, you name it. There’s something for everyone in there, like a massive history book split over more seasons.

There are more editions of this book though. For a full story, make sure you get the latest release. And keep in mind, chances are a new release in this collection will be out next year too.

Fortnite: The Ultimate Trivia Book, by Epic Games (2021)

This is one of the best Fortnite books for those who think they know everything about the game and the culture around it. Indeed, Fortnite is more than just a random game and if you’ve played it before, you probably know how addictive it can get.

I see myself as a bit of a seasoned player. Sure, I’m not the best and there’s a lot I’m not even aware of. But I think this is one of the best books in this genre. It’s organized by a few different levels of difficulty, with the most challenging questions able to trick experienced players too.

In other words, this isn’t necessarily a book for kids only. Whether you’re new to the game or you think you’re an experienced player, give this trivia book a chance and you’ll be surprised by the obstacles in it. It’s a total challenge suitable for every Fortnite fan out there.

Fortnite: The Ultimate Locker, by Epic Games (2020)

I know I have this tendency to go towards official Fortnite books, but it’s not my fault. There aren’t too many fan books out there, while the official ones are so well done that they feel like collectibles. This is another masterpiece in the official collection and it won’t let you down if you love Fortnite.

This isn’t just a book, but a mix between an official guide and a resource book. It’s written like a guide for Fornite Chapter One and includes pretty much anything you’ll need to succeed. Like other Fortnite books in the official collection, it has that holographic seal that guarantees its authenticity.

You'll gain access to the pets, outfits, tools, emotes, gliders, contrails, and pretty much all the details you need to master Fortnite. While it covers more seasons, the book is well written as a general guide. It also includes a bunch of fun facts and exclusive details about various references.

Fortnite: Battle Royal Survival Guide, by Epic Games (2019)

This is another official book released by Epic Games, one that every fan should have. The guide is aimed at Battle Royale fans and includes any tip and trick you can think of. Best part about it is you’ll find a series of exclusive ideas, something that even professional players have something to learn from.

Tutorials are full color and crystal clear. Even if you’re totally new to Fortnite, you’ll get used to everything in no time. It’s easy to understand and prompt. And of course, like all the books from Epic Games, it comes with the holographic mark for authenticity.

Like I said, this is one of those official Fortnite books suitable for both newbies and experienced players. Implement one thing at a time, get used to it and you’ll become a Battle Royale top player in no time. It’s an essential guide that helps people master every single aspect of the game.

All in all, the book shows you how to be a better player, as well as a smarter player. It’s a creative guide introducing you to sneaky survival techniques, offering detailed island guides too, where to go, and what to loot.

Fortnite Beginner's Guide, by Nicholas Merlino (2021)

If you’re already a Fortnite fan, you’re probably part of the world already. Plenty of action, gaming options, and countless players to team up with or play against, there's something for everyone out there. But whether you're completely new or a seasoned player, there's always something in there to learn about.

Nicholas Merlino has created the ultimate guide for Fortnite players and covers everything related to Battle Royale. It feels like it’s mainly aimed at complete newbies. No matter how good or new you are, you can always get better and that’s what this guide is going to do.

It's a comprehensive guide and surprisingly enough, it offers exclusive and detailed data and formulas that even professional players may overlook sometimes. From vehicles and buildings to weapons and maps, everything's covered in this guide, including techniques and strategies.

100% Unofficial Fortnite Annual 2024, by Farshore (2023)

This is the ultimate 72 pages short book to celebrate yet another great year for Fortnite. Get immersed into a world of new modes, impressive players, tactics, and skins. Basically, you'll explore the latest improvements and top-notch combos adopted by top players in the game.

While not an official Fortnite release, this annual is released on a regular basis and can easily compete against official Fortnite books. It’s a great choice for every fan out there, but it also makes an excellent gift for anyone who loves the game, especially kids.

Apart from skins and tactics, players will also discover some of the newest accessories, as well as a complete guide to the ultimate vehicles.

Get ready to discover sports mini games, as well as the creative mode and what kind of escape rooms you’ll need to go through. The most successful strategies are also explained in small details and these are only some of the few things you’ll get in this comprehensive almanac.

Amazing Coloring Book for Fortniters, by Joystick Publishing (2019)

My list of Fortnite books couldn’t be complete without a coloring book. I know, there are lots of books out there, but this is probably the most comprehensive one. Aimed at kids under 12, I’ll be honest with you, it’s pretty well-detailed and makes a good choice for Fortnite adult fans looking to relax too.

Whether you’re a fan of Fortnite or you want to surprise your kid, this book is excellent. It offers access to great vehicles, skins, scenes, characters, you name it. And once you’re done with a page, you’ll see art unfolding in front of your eyes.

There are more than 30 of your favorite characters in the game, as well as items and loot coloring pages. The best part? Battle pages. They’re complicated and challenging, but the amount of small details won’t disappoint you.

Overall, there are 124 pages in this book, so there’s plenty of coloring to do. Whoever you get this for, make sure you also include a set of colored pencils.

Bottom line

These are some of the best Fortnite books released over the past few years. Some of them are mainly informational, others explain the game and work like guides, offering access to new strategies and techniques.

No matter what you’re after, I’m confident you’ll find something useful in this list.

The post 6 Books for the Fans of Last of Us · Last of Us Based on Book? appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

Last of Us has a pretty interesting story, and if you're watching the show, you probably know already that you can also find a few books out there.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, books are always better than TV shows, but at the end of the day, the storyline is the same. There won't be any major differences, but just some small details here and there.

You already know what’s happening…

If you like Last of Us, I’m about to recommend a few Last of Us books with similar stories and plot twists, but, of course, many more differences.

Here are some of the best books out there if you’re into this kind of action.

What Are The Top Books Like Last of Us?

The Last of Us, by Faith Erin Hicks and Neil Druckmann (2013)

The book is based on the famous game that inspired the TV series too. Everything happens around two decades ago. Back then, a fungal infection turned into a pandemic and killed pretty much everyone.

Obviously, a few people survived, those with no friends or too many interactions, as well as those who looked after themselves.

They all live in quarantine zones now. No one goes in or out. Resources are limited, and these communities live with plenty of limitations.

Now, the story moves on to Ellie. She’s only 13 years old. Obviously, she’s lived her entire life in this apocalyptic world. She has no idea what the world was like before.

Just like any other youngster, she’s curious about what’s outside. What is behind those walls? What’s the outside world like?

She’s a bit of a rebel and has a bad attitude toward the military, so she doesn't have too many friends. But then, she meets Riley.

Riley shares the same curiosity, so the two team up and decide to explore the outside world together.

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy (2006)

This novel takes place somewhere in the future, in a postapocalyptic environment. The world is no longer like we know it today. Forget about civilization, plants, forests, landscapes, and things that define the world today.

Everything has been burned down… Nothing moves, apart from pieces of rubbish moved by the wind here and there. It’s a depressing scenario. Temperatures are in the freezing range. Besides, when it snows, it goes gray, rather than white.

The story follows a kid and his father. They need to reach the coast.

They believe there might be life there, but they have no clue what to expect. There’s no other hope. Everything around them is burned down, so they just hope for the best and keep moving.

The bad news is they don’t have too much. They only have a pistol to keep safe against rebel bands here and there, as well as the clothes they wear.

I won’t get into details, as I don’t want to spoil it. But this is the type of book that will build tension with every new page. And then, at the end… Well, you’ll have to read it to find out what’s going on.

I know it's similar to The Book of Eli, but there's something else to make it stand out.

The Children of Men, by P.D. James (2006)

The Children of Men is full of suspense and action. It offers an insightful characterization of a modern world, and to be honest with you, it’s a bit scary. It’s the type of idea that might actually happen in the future.

Anyway, the idea is pretty simple. People can no longer conceive. There are no more children and obviously no future. Everyone is infertile.

Youngest people in the world are not grownups, and everyone knows humankind will be gone within decades only.

Historian Theodore is aware of it. He also knows that sooner or later, he’ll go as well. Just like everyone else, he’s lost his desire to live because, well, there's not much to do. No one has any dreams or expectations, and there's no hope whatsoever.

But one day, he’s approached by a beautiful woman with a plan. She needs his help. It doesn’t make too much sense at first, but he decides to give her a hand.

At some point, he finds a secret, and this secret might hold the key to a brighter future. It might be the solution to save the world, but it takes a mission to do it.

I know there’s a movie made after this book, but trust me, ditch the movie and go for the book. It’s more suspenseful and adventurous than the movie.

The Girl with All the Gifts, by M.R. Carey (2014)

Melanie is an average student with an average lifestyle. She goes to school on a daily basis, has to eat those disgusting meals in school, and so on… Nothing special so far. But there’s something about her.

Melanie is also a zombie. She's not an aggressive one, and she's not trying to kill everyone around her.

On a different note, the world is about to face a major pandemic turning people into lost husks, all because of a virus.

However, Melanie is not affected, and she may actually have the solution to save the world.

The problem is the school she attends is not a regular school. Instead, it’s a research facility where she’s being studied, along with other zombies. It looks and feels like a school, but it’s not one.

When a bunch of infected people comes over, Melanie and everyone else are endangered. Lots of people are infected or killed, but a few of them manage to survive. The world feels like it's reaching an end, so Melanie and a few other survivors need to find a cure before it's too late.

This is one of those Last of Us books with a similar storyline. You have an infected girl, someone looking after her, and the struggle to save humanity. However, the ending is different and will give you a nice surprise.

Crocodile Fever, by Meghan Tyler (2019)

This is one of those Last of Us books with a different approach, but the idea is pretty much the same. In a postapocalyptic world, violence seems to be the only way forward, especially when infected people or monsters hunt you all the time.

Anyway, let me get into details… The action takes place in the 1980s, somewhere in Ireland.

Alannah has a quiet lifestyle. She deals with the kitchen flooring, and she loves what she does until her quiet lifestyle is shaken by her sister, Fianna.

Fianna has just been released from prison. She's got a few weapons, and she seems to be followed by someone. She's up to reform the sisterly bond, but nothing works according to the plan.

Instead, everything turns into a bloodbath. Violence, blood everywhere, and dead people all over the place. It's just how the two sisters know how to handle their childhood traumas.

The book is definitely not for everyone. There’s plenty of action, but I like to see the meaning behind the lines instead.

It tells us how we respond to violence and how we try to tackle traumas in our lives. Is vengeance the answer? Can violence be justified? Meghan Tyler answers all these questions in a tough thriller with an incredible story.

So Long Been Dreaming, by Nalo Hopkinson and Uppinder Mehan (2004)

If you fell in love with Last of Us, you probably got the idea behind the story. It's all about a future society where the military controls everything, and everyone seems to struggle in fear and poverty.

There are two options out there, facing the outside world filled with zombies or facing an aggressive military. None of these options is good for locals.

This concept is known as speculative fiction.

While this book is not based on Last of Us, it brings in the exact same stories. It’s one of those Last of Us books with a high sense of speculative fiction. And trust me, it can be scary at times.

It's an anthology that collects lots of different stories, and they're all similar. They take place in postcolonial society, and they cover multiple aspects, from deadly pandemics and zombies to different civilizations and perhaps an ending for humankind.

Featuring quality writings from more authors, these stories cover the potential end of the world. They’re about discovering new worlds, but also about dealing with loss and battling technology.

The best part about it? There are lots of different stories, so you can’t really get bored. The bad part? Some of them are so realistic that they might become scary.

Final thoughts on Books Similar To Last of Us

Last of Us has hit hard this year. It's one of the first hits of the year, and it features an impressive story.

We’ve seen similar ideas before, mostly in movies, but an ongoing series hits better.

Take a look at the book behind the story as well. Everything’s based on a game, but the book is simply more detailed and leaves room for imagination. If you love the idea, there are plenty of other Last of Us books with similar storylines and concepts.

Whether it comes to the early 1990s or the recent years, video games have changed the world. They have created communities and lifelong friends, as well as clans and tournaments. Lots of gamers today still replay old classics for the nostalgia and good memories. But then, many of these games have also been transposed into successful books or even series and collections.

Many stories are based on the actual games, so you might get a clue about what is going on. Some others come with random plot twists that will change everything you already know. Then, as you used to enjoy those games, you always had your own scenarios and stories in mind. Some of them became reality in a form of books. All in all, here are the best video game novels for some extraordinary adventures.

What Are The Best Video Game Fiction Books?

The Legend of Zelda, by Akira Himekawa

There are more books evolving Zelda's legend, but many of them are exclusively based on the games, and they actually mention their chronological order. If you are after a proper story with some good plot twists, Akira Himekawa's masterpiece will pleasantly surprise you. Furthermore, it brings in an impressive amount of beautiful illustrations.

The story follows Link – a young boy who needs to go through a series of challenges to discover the Triforce and bring it to Zelda. This is the first book in the series, so there are a few other releases in the collection. The boy needs to go through a series of challenges and overcome numerous obstacles to reach the land of Hyrule.

There are more quests Link has to go through. There are three spiritual stones that can actually help Link reveal the Triforce. In theory, it sounds like an easy adventure. As he goes from one land to another, he will face plenty of obstacles. The best part about this book? You will actually recognize some of these challenges and obstacles from the game as well.

Blood of Elves: The Witcher, by Andrzej Sapkowski

Andrzej Sapkowski has written a small series – two releases – prior to this book. Blood of Elves is the first book in the collection comprising six different releases. It is the source of The Witcher and brings in an exquisite adventure that moves on throughout the next releases. There is also a standalone novel released later on, after the whole collection came out.

Elves, humans, gnomes and dwarves have lived together without too many conflicts – it has been more than a century now. All races wait for a prophesied child. This child could be the best thing that has ever happened to the world, but also the evil that could ruin it. No one can really tell, but everyone is waiting for the big moment. The child shows up eventually, but things are far from being too peaceful.

War has never been closer, and more and more monsters go on an impressive hunt to get the child. She has extraordinary powers, and everyone knows it. Geralt of Rivia is a local assassin with a harsh reputation – also known as the Witcher. His one and only responsibility becomes protecting this child. There is one challenge after another. Will the Witcher manage to accomplish his new mission?

Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, by Anton Gill

If you love Assassin's Creed, chances are you will love the books as well. There is a bigger collection out there, and Renaissance is the first part of it. You need to begin with the first book in order to understand everything. It is one of the best video game novels in terms of action and suspense. It is a story of betrayal, disappointment, courage, and the will to start all over again.

A young man is betrayed by the big families in Italy. He is up for vengeance, and he knows he needs to plan everything in the smallest details. He wants to clear corruption, but also bring some honor to his family. As a direct consequence, he started learning the art of being an assassin. Ezio knows it will be a challenging task, but he is totally up for it.

He relies on great minds for lessons of life and wisdom – such as Leonardo Da Vinci. He gains a few allies on the way, and he becomes their leader. Everyone is pushing for a better world – a change. But then, his potential enemies will not just wait for him. This is how a great story of conspiracy and revenge begins.

BioShock: Rapture, by John Shirley

World War II has reached to an end. The world is completely different now, as well as both local and international politics. Taxes have never been higher, while the atomic bomb has spread fear into the whole world. There are more rumors out there regarding secret agencies and governments. It looks like America is crumbling from the inside and everyone wants some of the freedom back.

Andrew Ryan struggled in poverty and worked hard to become one of the most respected people in the world. He supports the population and believes everyone deserves a better destiny. He decides to start a new society from scratch – a community without censorship or a government. Morals are pushed to another level, and everyone is supposed to give something back to the community.

This is how Rapture was created. The city is located below the sea and grows like no other. However, this city will not last long. While it has a great future ahead, it is less likely to survive in the long run. One threat after another aims to take this community down. What is going to happen in the end? Who will survive this challenge?

Mass Effect: Revelation, by Drew Karpyshyn

The Protheans rule the world, yet the species is no longer around. It has vanished thousands of years ago, but the technologies it has created is still commonly used by today's society. Humanity finds a bit of technology on Mars and tackles the space – a new species struggling to build its way around the galatic community. But as big as it is, the space has already been colonized.

David Anderson is a ship commander, as well as a hero from previous wars. He finds a military research place that no one really knew about, and he decides to investigate it. While secret, the base still hides some secrets. There are lots of dead bodies around, as well as smoking remains. Who attacked this place? What was the role? Where is Kahlee Sanders?

Kahlee is a young scientist who has managed to get out of the base before it was attacked. Did she know anything? Where is she now? She becomes the main suspect as well. David must ally with a few agents in order to find her. One thing leads to another, and a major conspiracy is revealed. Keep in mind that this is only the first book in the series.

Halo: The Fall of Reach, by Eric Nylund

This is the first book in the series and lays the foundation for further action and more novels. The story begins with the human-covenant war. The humankind is likely to disappear if the last warrior alive fails in his mission. The humanity is now residing in Halo, but the conflict aims to push it out of this world and ruin everything. Meanwhile, the covenant juggernaut floats around space and kills everyone and everything.

There is one stronghold out there, and it must be wiped – the Reach. This is the doorstep to humanity and the last military fortress to handle the danger. However, the actual defense is not the first priority. Instead, the military staff is trying to confuse the covenant and prevent the juggernaut from discovering the new location of the humankind.

There is a small chance to defeat the covenant, but then, the planet is where the first super soldiers were trained – the so-called Spartans. They are engineered to be perfect – professional and deadly. A handful of them will need to fight back. They never surrender, so they either win or die trying. One of them – the Master Chef – has a brighter fate ahead. What is the outcome of this fight?

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne, by David Gaider

This is the prequel to the world-renowned game – the RPG that has changed the world. David Galder has come up with the ideal story for BioWare to produce an outstanding game, but the book itself is not to be overlooked either – lots of action and a deeper approach to small details. It will simply not let you down – there are a few other releases in the same series too.

The story begins with Rebel Queen's death. She is betrayed by her lords and murdered. Maric is now the leader of a nation. He is young and has no clue what to do next, but he knows that he has an important mission – freeing the nation from a tyrant. Everyone has high expectations of him, especially as everyone lives in fear and terror.

Despite his position, Maric cannot count on too many people. He has a few allies though – Loghain and Rowan. Loghain is a local outlaw who once saved his life. Rowan is a warrior maiden who he was supposed to marry. Surrounded by traitors and faithless servants, the trio needs to find a way to restore peace.

StarCraft: Liberty's Crusade, by Jeff Grubb

This is the first epic story in an incredible story full of space novels, series that you may already be familiar with and plenty of warfare. The action takes place somewhere in the future – far from Earth too, about 60,000 light years away. A group of Terran survivors are fighting the aggressive Protoss and Zerg Swarm. Every species wants to survive by eliminating the other – there are no alliances.

Danny Liberty used to be a reporter. His last investigation went too close to a corrupted node in the Terran Confederacy. At some point, he had to make a choice. He could go on with his investigation or go on the front lines and over the conflict. Obviously, he decided to go in the middle of the action and find out what the Marines are doing.

Facing betrayal and spies everywhere, Danny knows that he can only trust himself. He ends up in the middle of the war, where every piece of information he gathers could solve a puzzle. From many points of view, the mankind's survival only depends on the fighters on the front lines, but Danny thinks he can do more than just report what is going on.

World of Warcraft: Tides of Darkness, by Aaron S. Rosenberg

Orgrim Doomhammer has managed to gain control of the orc horde by killing the current leader, who was corrupted by the enemies. He is now ready to conquer the whole Azeroth and bring peace to his species. On the other hand, Anduin Lothar is a reputable fighter and warrior. His homeland is far, as he had to lead an army toward Lordaeron.

Allied up with King Terenas, he ends up leading a bunch of human nations ready to go to war. But the orc horde is less likely to be impressed. The merciless beasts are marching forward and would do anything to eliminate the humankind.

The preparations for the war gain in intensity, and other species join in as well. The trolls go in, as well as the dwarves and the elves. Will the alliance manage to save Azeroth? How powerful is it going to be against an aggressive army of warrior orcs?

Final Thoughts on the best Video Game Novels

As a short final conclusion, many video games have been made after books and the other way around. While games are more intense, books give you a better perception – a better storyline and more details. These are some of the best video game novels out there, and many of them are part of larger series, so chances are you can keep your hunger for action going as you smash one release after another.

The post 10 Best Choose Your Own Adventure Books & Games 2022 appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

If you are a 1980’s or a 1990’s kid, chances are you are familiar with those choose your own adventure books. You could choose your own story and alter the course of the action. With time, similar games showed up as well and believe it or not, they are getting back into trends, ready to entice both kids and adults who like a different approach.

Such stories or games come from a second-person point of view. Basically, as the reader, you are also the protagonist of the story. You make different choices that determine the final outcome, as well as your further actions and adventures. These being said, here are some of the best rated choose your adventure games or books out there.

Letters from the Moon, by Marvelous Spiral Studios (Game)

This is probably the most advanced option when interested in interactive fiction games, which uses an inventory system. The game follows Dorothy Chen. She is the first Chinese-American woman reaching the moon, but there is a big problem with her expedition – her spaceship crashed while getting there. A rescue mission would take over a week to arrive, so she needs to find a way to survive until she is located and found.

As she starts exploring the surroundings, she finds an underground city. Built by aliens, the city is now empty and deserted. However, she finds a holographic cat that aims to educate her on whatever is going on around her – including the potential dangers. From starvation and robots to mutant dogs, this game will give you more than 30 different endings based on the decisions you make.

The game developer studio MSS did a great job with the story, I personally think everyone should give this game a shot if you are into space operas.

Depression Quest, by Zoe Quinnm Patrick Lindsey & Isaac Schankler (Game)

Depression Quest adopts a different approach. It is one of the most detailed choose your own adventure games out there, but there is nothing about exciting characters, fantasy, aliens, monsters or fairies. Instead, you are a character dealing with depression and you need to handle your life – a realistic approach that is quite actual in today’s society, where life has both ups and downs.

Generally speaking, you need to manage your own life. You basically live with depression and you must go through all kinds of daily events. You need to keep on top of your illness, but you also need to establish personal relationships with those around you. On top of all these, you have a job and you need to keep it – definitely a good simulator for everyday life activities.

Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remasteredm by Aspyr (Game)

The game has a good history. It was released in 2005 and it was an instant hit among choose your own adventure games. However, since then, the game has been brought into modern society. It is more actual than ever and it gives you access to an interesting plot that can be easily altered based on the decisions you make.

The idea is fairly simple to understand. You are a man with supernatural powers. Your power is a constant craving to commit murder though. You need to resist it, but also feed it. At the same time, there are all sorts of police detectives trying to get you down – even more decisions to make while mastering your escape.

Firewatch, by Campo Santo (Game)

Firewatch is not just a great game to alter yourself with your decisions, but also a good adventure to keep you entertained for hours. It is available on more platforms, but it is mostly played on computers. The first-person adventure takes you in the middle of nowhere. You are Henry and you find yourself in the Shoshone National Forest.

The action takes place in 1989, so there are no gadgets or modern technologies around you. Instead, you need to rely on old-fashioned things and instruments to complete your mission. You also have a walkie-talkie to communicate with your superior. As a player, you decide how this relationship develops overtime – plenty of different endings based on your choices.

Neo Cab, by Chance Agency (Game)

Available for more platforms – including computers, Neo is one of the most exciting interactive fiction games out there. Basically, there is a futuristic story, but you also become some sort of a detective looking for clues. All in all, you are Lina. The action takes place far in the future. Lina is the last human taxi driver and has a mission.

Her friend disappeared and she needs to solve the mystery. You stick to the taxi driving job though, but you end up taking all sorts of characters on the backseat. Many of the passengers have secrets, while others can reveal clues regarding your friend. As you progress, the decisions you make may take you in different directions.

Little Kid, Big City, by Beth Beckman (Book)

The best part about choose your own adventure books is the fact that they work for everyone. Even if you end up with a basic story for toddlers, you will still find it fascinating how you can change the final outcome based on your decisions. The same rule applies to Little Kid, Big City – aimed at kids and teenagers, the book is just as useful for adults who love traveling.

There are more books in this series and each of them will allow you to come up with your own itinerary. At the end of each page, you can choose where you want to go next. It follows your adventure through a few major cities in the world. Believe it or not, this is probably the most interactive way to travel from the comfort of your armchair.

To Be or Not To Be, by Ryan North (Book)

If you think to choose your own adventure books are for kids only, you are totally wrong. Some of them can take action even further. This one puts you in a pretty interesting position – you are a prince in Denmark. Your father – the king – has just passed away. Your mother is about to get a new husband – it is not someone from the outside, but your actual uncle.

Are you going to cope with it? Will you go against it? This book is beautifully illustrated and allows you to make a plethora of different decisions. You are basically Hamlet and you will go through Shakespeare’s tragedy from your own point of view. Your decisions – or better said, lack of decisions – will give you a completely unexpected outcome.

Lost in Austen, by Emma Campbell Webster (Book)

This book is suitable for both males and females, despite being Elizabeth Bennet. The story is quite exciting and will give you plenty of action, regardless of your position. All in all, your role is fairly simple to understand – you want a good marriage with the right person. You want to love and be loved and for this, you need to work hard and make a plethora of different decisions.

Getting to Mr. Darcy may seem pretty straightforward, but you will actually need to struggle. As you try to reach your goal, you will be taken through many of Jane Austen’s previous novels. You will find characters from Emma or Sense and Sensibility, among many others. All in all, the best part is there are lots of decisions to change the final outcome.

Choose Your Own Disaster, by Dana Schwartz

Choose Your Own Disaster can easily go among the most intriguing choose your own adventure books. It follows the classic rules to go in this category, but it is also a bit of a memoir. Some may say it is a memoir designed like a choose your own adventure book. There are no mystical characters, fantastic princess or fairies around.

Instead, you are about to experience a unique adventure with many real-life connotations. You will run into a few personality quizzes as well, but you will also laugh or experience dramatic events. You are a young woman struggling to find her identity in the 20s. Luckily enough, there are plenty of choices and options during this beautiful age.

A Girl Walks into a Bar, by Helena S. Paige

When you think about to choose your adventure books for adults, you inevitably imagine a bit of eroticism. Fortunately for you, you can stop here because Helena S. Paige has come up with the perfect story. The title is quite self-explanatory – a girl walks into a bar and her options are countless. What are you going to do next?

You can find a nice rich man and try to hook up. You can also chat with that pretty bartender and get to know her better. Are you open-minded? You might discover a mysterious woman to follow her to a different location. You have plenty of choices and your imagination has no limits on this one – definitely a must.

Conclusion

Bottom line, these are some of the most interactive choose your own adventure books and games out there. There is plenty of action in all sorts of environments – from space scenarios to futuristic cities and local bars. No matter what you are into, these games and books will definitely hook you in. The best part? You can always start all over and choose a completely different path in your adventure for a different ending.

The post 8 Best Game Fanfiction Books appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

Fanfiction is a genre that delivers fictional writing for fans but will typically be founded on works of fiction that already exist. It can be based on any fictional or non-fictional topics like video games, cartoons, anime, movies, and more. Game fanfiction books will primarily be a basis for video games and fans can relate to the subject or with the characters. Below is a list of some books that we deem best in the category.

The Elder Scrolls – Zaneta’s Chronicles: The Lost Mane, by A.L. Zuniga

The Lost Mane is the last book in this trilogy, and in this installment. Adrian chose to go all-in with raw emotion and extraordinary artwork. Previous installments proved Adrian's excellent writing skills with compelling storylines and character development. Details that made Morrowind an intriguing land, such as food and creatures, were emphasized with expertise.

Like the other books, The Lost Mane follows the story of Zaneta. She is an exceptional Khajiit who lives in Vvardenfell. Everything changes when her family is attacked. Her husband is killed, and she cannot find her children. She courageously decides to go looking for them herself. She will traverse a country filled with political turmoil and on the verge of an unknown epidemic.

However, she is set on discovering where her loved ones were taken. As she focuses on remaining true to herself, her powers and character are pushed to the extreme. No consequences matter if that is what it means to find her children.

If you are into The Elder Scrolls series this would be a great game fanfiction novel for you.

Insignia, by S.J Kincaid

This book combines humor with a futuristic WWII view. The war takes place in space where teenagers fight, with no victims. The planet's natural resources are almost depleted, and this war is meant to try to control assets in the solar system. Unluckily, the enemy is triumphing. The savior maybe Tom Raines, who doesn’t seem very heroic. He is fourteen years old with problematic skin. However, he possesses knowledge about virtual reality gaming, which makes him the phenomenon behind the battle’s drone control.

When he gets into the Intrasolar Forces, his life abruptly changes, and he shifts from being a nobody. He now becomes an important person, new opportunities are knocking, he finds new friends, and he is close to getting a girlfriend. Amid all this good fortune, there is a price to pay. Tom complicates the computer in his brain with impulsiveness and crazy. There will be unexpected twists, and you will root for Tom to find someone he can trust during this mission.

Ack-Ack Macaque, by Gareth L. Powell

Ack-Ack Macaque a game fanfiction trilogy. The protagonist is a cynical, hard drinker, and a cigar chomper who is the main character of a trendy WWII-themed online game. Every day he battles with the German Ninjas that parachute over the gentle Kent fields. However, he is not just a digital creation. Game masters tampered with a real macaque’s mind and plugged him as part of the game to offer the lead character something more. Ack-Ack escapes and will discover that life is actually not all the joyful rattling of machine guns and engine roars.

It is the 21st century, and Germany and France have merged. Technology is quickly transforming humanity, and nuclear-powered Zeppelins exist all over the globe. Ack-Ack has only known and lived a video game life. After the British throne illegally accesses the research laboratory, he tries to getaway. Ack-Ack gets out of his game world to race against time as Armageddon doomsday approaches.

United States of Japan, by Peter Tieryas

The book is set in an immersive alternate history where the Japanese rule over Americans. But is there a way to resist through a subversive video game?

Years ago, Japan defeated Americans by winning WWII. No one believes Japan’s action in the war was anything but commendable. Well, except for the George Washingtons. This is a group of rebels that are fighting to be free. Their latest terrorist plot is to supply an illegal video game. In the game, players will imagine how everything in the world would have been had the US won the war.

Captain Beniko’s job is censoring video games, but he is tasked with analyzing this disturbing development. He, however, seems to be hiding something. Gradually, he has been finding out that this case is more complicated than it appears to be. Again, the sources of the subversive game are controversial and even more dangerous, contrary to the initial censor suspicion.

Bash Bash Revolution, by Douglas Lain

This is a story of apocalypse and revolution developed by the tale of a broken family. Matthew Munson, who is seventeen, takes the 13th position in the Bash Bash Revolution state game. This is an outdated game, but one that gets a lot of tournament play. Matthew is an unambitious school dropout, with a struggling mother and an absent dad, Jeffrey Munson.

Jeffrey left home eight years ago and is part of a secretive government project seeking to develop sentient artificial intelligence. When he shows up again, much to Matthew’s displeasure, he insists that they bond over video games.

They try to reconnect by playing Bash Bash Revolution. Matthew then discovers that Jeffrey is more invested in his artificial intelligence. Like how fast Jeffrey had appeared, he disappeared once more, just as Matthew was about to let him into his life. From this life-shattering betrayal, Matthew begins the process of discovering the fundamental nature of this government-sponsored AI program.

In Real Life, by Cory Doctorow & Jen Wang

In Real Life is a sensitive and thoughtful illustration of gaming, adolescence, being poor, and cultural clash. Anda is a fan of Coarsegold Online, which is a huge role-playing game. She spends any free minute playing. That is where she can lead, be a fighter, and an overall hero. It is also a platform where she can meet and befriend different people from the world. For her, gaming is ultimately a good thing.

Things will begin to take a more complicated turn when she befriends Raymond, a gold farmer. Raymond’s game embodiment is an illegal collector of valuable objects sold to players in developed countries. Those from these established countries are wealthy and have money to burn. But this act goes against Coarsegold’s rules. Anda will then come to discover that concerns about right and wrong are far less straightforward when someone’s actual livelihood is in danger.

This story will make you see some ways in which virtual lives are impactful to the real world, whether you realize it or not, this makes this book a great game fanfiction for nerds.

Otherworld, by Jason Segel & Kirsten Miller

How much are we ready to pay if technology can provide us with everything? This is the question the Otherworld mirrors. The authors are addressing a frightening future, and the reality is that it's not so far away. If you are interested in the terrifying technological possibilities, you will be trapped by this book. Readers are introduced to sensations that they would never feel in real life. They also find out what they miss, something that becomes too difficult to part with.

The Otherworld is a virtual reality game you may not wish to end, but Simon has discovered this is not the case for everyone. Imagine a game with no controls and no screens, and you can smell, taste, and touch it. This is the new reality in the world depicted in this book with the basis of a new technology prototype. It all sounds too good to be accurate, but it is.

Those testing the beta are tricked into perceiving the Otherworld as real-life. This world could also open doors for those limited by physical constraints like the disabled or paralyzed. There are also no rules and laws. You can indulge your every desire and live the best way possible, but being injured can cause serious consequences.

Warcross, by Marie Lu

When the game named Warcross takes over the world, a bounty hunter girl hacks into its detrimental depths. It isn't just a game but the livelihood for the many people who play, with an obsession that began a decade ago and global fans. Some escape reality there, while others are there for profit.

Meanwhile, Emika Chen struggles to make ends meet, and she tracks down the players who illegally stake the game. Surviving the bounty hunting world is complex and too competitive. Emika decides to hack into the opening match during the International Warcross Championships to earn herself quick money.

The Warcross creator, Hideo Tanaka, calls her with an irresistible job offer. He is looking for a spy on the tournament’s inside to unravel a significant security issue. In Japan, she will get into a world that she never imagined, a world of great fortune and being famous. However, she discovers a sinister plot with worldwide consequences for everyone within the Warcross empire. Trust will be the greatest of all gambles.

Final Thoughts

Fanfiction is a unique writing style mainly because it is done for circles of fans. Our list of game fanfiction books above would be a total delight for video game lovers. If you are looking for more in this genre check our video game books collection.

I can't trust anyone. Not the four people I've looked up to my whole life, not myself or my parents. Not the fantasy girl who speaks in blossoms….

A personal message from the author:

As an #ownvoices title, I wanted to combine my experience with schizoaffective disorder with my love for fantasy tournaments and battles.

— Justin Ho

After graduating high school, Luka joins Hawaii’s top gaming guild, Daylark, with four teenagers famous in the esports world. He couldn't possibly be more excited to design an original character—a Combatant—with his teammates. In the Fraye, a nationwide competition, Combatants fight to the death in virtual reality battlefields. And this year, Daylark is aiming for first place.

But Luka has a big secret—he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder a year ago. But he's fine. He's normal now. He's over the delusions, and a holographic trophy is within reach.

Isn't it?
