Short poetry books are like a little slice of heaven. They are perfect for when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Poetry is often underrated. Most people would rather stick to action based on real events or perhaps some original fiction. People want stories, yet poetry can follow the exact same standards. Poetry can go in more directions.

You can find poetry to relax your mind and soul, but also to improve your vocabulary. You can also find action in poetry, as well as an interesting approach to reading.

The Healing Power of Poetry

This may be personal, but I consider poetry to be one of the most powerful and effective forms of self-therapy. A well-written poem or poetry collection will always have you significantly engage your senses and emotions, making the art very effective for connecting your mind, senses, and body as you read.

If you think about poem structure, especially for short poems, you can agree with me that it favours brevity. Still, the best poems succinctly capture detail and pass powerful messages. Poetry writing requires that the poet be highly cautious with word choices. This also includes the number of words used. A good poet strives to create an accurate snapshot of what they are feeling to make sure that the reader can reach their ideas for a genuine connection.

The best poems are usually written from the creator’s heart and are meant to bring out some form of emotion(s). They also should be raw and written to the point.

Poems are excellent forms of connection, and they possess powerful healing connections. This is why you will even find doctors, physicians, and psychotherapists using them as healing tools with their patients.

How We Call Short Poetry Books?

Chapbooks. These short books are 40-page collections and includes a smaller number of poems.

All in all, here are some of the best-rated short poetry books (or chapbooks) out there from the recent years.

What Are The Top Short Uplifting and Healing Poetry Books?

Grace's Daughter, by Alyssa Stephens (2023)

Grace's Daughter is a poetry collection that chronicles the life journey of a character named Alyssa Stephens. The book is structured as a series of poems that represent different stages of Alyssa's life, from childhood to womanhood. This thematic arrangement allows the reader to follow the character's evolution, offering insights into her experiences and emotions as she grows and matures.

The poetry in Grace's Daughter is characterized by its exploration of universal themes such as growth, self-discovery, and the transition from innocence to wisdom. The author employs a narrative style that is both descriptive and reflective, aiming to create a connection with the reader through shared experiences and emotions. The poems vary in tone and style, reflecting the changing perspectives and realities of the protagonist as she progresses through different life stages.

A significant aspect of the book is its focus on womanhood, with the poems often delving into the joys, challenges, and complexities of being a woman. This is achieved through the portrayal of personal milestones, emotional upheavals, and the gradual accumulation of wisdom. The collection aims to resonate with readers by drawing parallels between Alyssa's journey and the universal experiences of growth and self-realization.

A Universe Of Poems, by O.J.D (2023)

A Universe Of Poems: From Pen To Paper A Poetry Journey is a captivating anthology that promises a sublime excursion through the vast landscapes of human emotion. In this concise yet rich collection of 34 pages, readers are invited to traverse a universe where each poem is a constellation of thought, feeling, and profound introspection.

The book's strength lies in its universal appeal, the author's verses possess an innate ability to resonate with the reader, drawing parallels to their own life experiences. As you start reading the lines, you encounter poetry that spans the spectrum of human sentiment from the tender touch of love poems that sing with a sweet cadence, to the robust, unyielding stanzas on resilience that echo the human spirit's indefatigability.

Each piece in this collection serves as a reflective surface, inviting readers to see parts of themselves within the verses. The poet's skillful use of language and rhythm transforms the simple act of reading into a dynamic interaction with the text: a dialogue between the poet, the poem, and the person holding the book.

Scattered Hallways, by Maylee Curtis (2023)

Scattered Hallways is an evocative anthology of 73 poems that intricately weave the journey from heartbreak to healing. Each page resonates with the raw emotions experienced in the aftermath of a relationship, making it immensely relatable for those who have trodden the path of love and loss.

The poems, varying in intensity, capture the myriad stages one undergoes in the quest for closure. From the ache of longing to the warmth of rediscovered self-love, this collection serves as a balm for wounded souls. It is more than just a book; it's a comforting friend, whispering words of reassurance and hope. A must-read for anyone seeking solace in the written word.

Plantains and Our Becoming, by Melania Luisa Marte (2023)

Melania Luisa Marte's new poetry collection Plantains and Our Becoming is a powerful and tender exploration of identity, culture, home, and belonging. This poetry book starts by pointing out that the word Afro-Latina is not recognized by the dictionary, but the author believes in the power of words to create one's own truth and build upon the legacies of their ancestors. Through examining the identities and histories of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the collection celebrates and centers the Black diasporic experience while also exploring themes such as self-love, nationalism, displacement, and ancestral knowledge.

The poetry collection moves from New York to Texas to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, highlighting the legacies of colonialism and racism but also the beauty and joy that come from embracing one's identity and heritage. It is a war cry, both a request for anointment and a blessing. This beautifully observed and rousing collection is a must-read for fans of Jasmine Mans and Fatimah Asghar.

Blueprint, by Iulia David (2022)

Iulia’s poems in the Blueprint brim and ooze, not just liveliness but life. Their logic is what you need to get you ready for what’s to come. The poems are not just lines. They stream and originate deeply from their creator’s soul, which is what will have you moved and mutated to ride in light or darkness.

What I love in this book is that Iulia has also used imaginative truths and cellular forces that I feel makes the poems in this book timeless. They are brilliant and intricate puzzle boxes that yield treasurable insights from their core. They conjure real-life experiences and stir up thoughts and memories about childhood and passed time.

Iulia has brilliantly used her own language to navigate all the themes highlighted in every poem to make it relatable and leave you with something to ponder on. Blueprint has both comforting poems and some that will have you think about different issues, which is vital for passing new messages and voicing new concerns.

Some poems may be unsettling due to the issues discussed, but Iulia has excellently used them to get readers out of conditioned or conventional thinking. These ideas will be practical for developing a more acute feeling of empathy while you explore all you feel as you go through them. Blueprint is a masterpiece for life and a valuable entity for a fresh voice.

The Hill We Climb, by Amanda Gorman (2021)

Amanda Gorman became an international figure in January, 2021. She was chosen to become the youngest poet to deliver a reading at a presidential inauguration – Joe Biden’s inauguration. She also became the sixth poet to deliver the reading and she made an excellent first impression.

Her popularity skyrocketed straight away and for some good reasons. Amanda Gorman’s words captivated the whole world and brought hope to people. Citizens of the USA and people from all over the world saw desire and aspiration in her eyes.

The poem has been released in a book. Moreover, it is enriched with Oprah Winfrey’s foreword. The poem celebrates the USA and underlines how powerful poetry can be. It is not just a patriotic poem, but a poem of dreams and ambitions for anyone who reads it.

Poems for You and Me, by Ramesh Maharaj (2021)

This book is likely to bring peace to your soul, but also put you in a great mood. There are not less than 31 different poems out there and each of them will pleasantly surprise you. The book has been written with a clear purpose in mind – a single poem a day will enlighten your spirit and uplift your mind.

The poems are well written, but some of them also come with some hidden meanings. At the end of the day, they seem to recognize different difficulties in life that everyone goes through at some point or another. Many of the poems are written in a message style that will go straight to your heart.

Whether you are trying to relieve stress or you face some difficulties in your life, these poems can help you overcome all kinds of problems. They will positively influence you and help you make progress. Rhymes are beautiful and each poem ends with a straightforward message – the life lesson of the day.

The Poetry Pharmacy, by William Sieghart (2018)

This is one of the most inspiring short poetry collection out there. Short poetry has become a medication for the heart and soul over the past years. Poems are now used as spiritual ailments and William Sieghard has taken advantage of it. His book will give you all the prescription medications you need for your soul.

The book has been massively praised and not just over the Internet, but on radio and television as well. His prescriptions are obviously given with words, hidden meanings and direct messages. Whether you hit a rough patch or you feel like life is only throwing lemons at you, this book will heal your soul and put you back on track in no time.

The book is pocket-sized and can be taken anywhere, anytime. Spend your lunch break going through a poem and stress will magically go away. It makes no difference if you feel lonely or hopeless – there is definitely something in this book to ease the pain.

The Fire of Joy, by Clive James (2020)

This is the author's last book before he passed away in 2019. Its title is inspired by the military and underlines the fact that collective power relies on individuals, but also the other way around. Just like the title, every poem has a meaning that will make you think twice about yourself, your beliefs and life.

The author has come up with a collection of English poems. Some of them relate to your heart. Others are about the present, not to mention the past. When taken altogether, they tell a wonderful story. Put in the same book, these poems will provide the energy and will to discover and learn.

Each poem has a meaning. Apart from the meaning, the author has also brought in some commentary. Comments go in more directions. Some of them are historical, while others are biographical. Enjoy these essays in miniature and take advantage of the author’s knowledge and experience – an experience that will not be forgotten.

Set Me on Fire, by Ella Risbridger (2019)

The author has been extremely generous with this book. It is one of the most touching short poetry books out there. Simply put, each poem will go straight to your heart. There is a poem for every feeling in the world, whether you are happy to be in love, sad about your life, lonely or stressed.

Get ready to discover a plethora of different authors in this book. It is practically a collection of fresh voices from all over the world. Feelings come first and you can tell from the format. Everything is intuitive, so you know precisely how each poem is going to affect you. The idea is fairly simple to understand – someone else has been in your situation too and they have managed to get over it.

Some of these poems are about eating. Some others are about kissing. Some of them target those who feel lonely. There are kind and encouraging words about breakups, new relationship, waiting, having and grieving. Bottom line, this book is about being alive and experiencing life as it is.

Milk and Honey, by Rupi Kaur (2015)

Poems are not necessarily about action or stories – instead, they often come with hidden meanings and they are mostly written for the heart. When you read a poem, you take your time. You focus on each word and you try to actually feel it, rather than read it. This book is a collection of poetry (with a bit of prose) about survival.

This is the type of book that will definitely help those who faced abuse, sadness, toxic relationships and despair. It is about loss, but it is also about love. Then, it has a high dose of femininity – remember, there are other people who have been in the same situation. You can do it too and this book is there to help.

Each of these poems has a purpose. Some of them will help you with pain. Some others will soothe your soul and handle heartache. The book takes you through some of the most bitter moments in life, but it also shows you that there is always sweetness around if you are willing to look for it.

The Lost Words, by Robert Macfarlane (2018)

This could be one of the best short poetry books for those who love life. Not only do words match like a glove and can enhance your spirit, but you will also find some stunning hand illustrations. This is not necessarily a poetry book, but a magic book. It celebrates life and wonder, as well as everything around you.

Moreover, depending on your age, this book could bring a different feeling. If you are young, get ready to discover words that slowly tend to disappear – kids’ childhood years are different now. If you are older, you will bring back some amazing memories from your childhood – think about dandelion, bramble or acorn. The book is about imagination and the joy associated with childhood years.

This poetry book aims to prevent the disappearance of old school childhood years. It celebrates nature and often relates to the calm and peaceful British countryside. The book is suitable for all ages and will most likely raise your inner spirit and enhance your moment. It will relieve stress and make you feel happy about who you are and what surrounds you.

Pillow Thoughts, by Courtney Peppernell (2017)

This is not the type of book you need if you are happy about everything in your life. It may put you off and make you feel a bit sad. Instead, this is a book for those with broken hearts. It is suitable for those who have been through bad relationships, toxic friendships and heartbreaking moments. For these people, the book will be a natural remedy.

Pillow Thoughts is an impressive collection of poetry, with a bit of prose here and there. Everything in the book relates to love and heartbreak. Moreover, raw emotions are described in a crystal clear manner. This is not the book to make you sad, but to help you understand that others have been through similar situations – you can and you will survive.

The book is split into two different sections – ideal when you actually need them. Get a brew and enjoy the natural healing process.

Final Thoughts on the Top Short Uplifting Poetry Books

Words indeed have power in them, and poems are excellent proofs. Poems are the way to go if you ever want to get into your feelings and get different perspectives about life. You will never go wrong with a good poem. That is why we have highlighted some short poetry collections that will get deep in your soul, spice up your life, encourage you, and give you life lessons.

In the end, these short poetry collections will mess with your feelings – no doubts about it. Some of them will encourage you, while others will push you from behind. Whether you need your soul soothed or you look after a stress relief solution, the above-mentioned books will make the difference.

Ballads the Cradle (the 1st book of 5), is an amazing poetry book exploring the life of Biblical Abraham. His life is not far different from the life we live these days. The post 10+ Beautifully Illustrated Poetry Books For 2023 (Updated) appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

Illustrated poetry books are a great way to appreciate poetry and the artwork at the same time.

To me, the most resonant poems emanate authenticity and heartfelt sincerity, profoundly influencing the reading experience. While poetry can manifest in diverse styles, those accompanied by illustrations offer an enriched dimension of connection. These visual aids are not mere adornments; they provide a profound gateway into the depth of an author's psyche. Through them, we grasp the intricate weave of the author's vision, allowing both our intellect and emotions to engage fully with the narrative's essence.

Below are illustrated poetry books to give you a different lens of wisdom and visual connection.

What Are the Top Illustrated Poetry Books?

You Are Only Just Beginning, by Morgan Harper Nichols (2023)

In You Are Only Just Beginning, Morgan Harper Nichols delivers a collection of poetry and essays, accompanied by colorful illustrations that often incorporate words. Drawing from nature and the structure of the heroine's journey, Nichols sheds light on various stages of self-discovery.

I think her emphasis on fostering courage, nurturing curiosity, and seeking solace during challenges resonates deeply with those navigating their personal paths. The interplay between her thoughtful prose and vibrant artwork creates a unique experience for the reader.

Personally, I believe this book not only serves as a guide to personal growth but also stands out as a visual delight, making it a thoughtful gift for those at the cusp of new beginnings.

The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran (2023)

The Prophet is a 1923 work by Lebanese-American artist, philosopher, and writer Khalil Gibran, comprising 26 poetic essays.

Set in the foreign city of Orphalese, the narrative follows the prophet Almustafa, poised to return home after a 12-year stay. As he prepares to embark on his journey, a group of locals approach him, leading to profound conversations about various aspects of life and the human experience.

These dialogues are organized into chapters, each delving into topics such as love, marriage, work, freedom, self-knowledge, and even death, reflecting on the myriad facets of the human condition.

Awakening of the Heart, by Barbara Glanquitto (2022)

Awakening of the Heart is a poetry collection but, more importantly, a book about life. It will take you on a self-discovery journey and a personal transformation from your toughest heartbreaks into blooming love.

It is a book for anyone who has had to hide their passionate spirit for other people’s sakes, anyone who has done away with their identity so as to occupy a role they did not devise, and those who have had to suffer through love but have never despaired on its strong and undeniable power. This collection is for us to empower ourselves, heal from heartbreak or tough relationships, and keep loving.

The beautiful black and white illustrations speak for themselves and will help you reflect more on your heart’s awakening. They will speak to the hidden parts of your soul powerfully for a journey of re-discovery and self-exploration.

Barbara has done an excellent job capturing emotional essence and connection by telling her truth. She has candidly and provocatively written this collection to help anyone who feels their life is a rollercoaster. Awakening of the Heart is uplifting to help you triumph and grow because it depicts strength for overcoming our pains, sadness, and losses.

Illustrated Nature Poetry, by Unforgettable Notes (2021)

Are you often challenged by connecting with a loved one with concentration problems? Is it tricky to maintain conversations with them? Do they find it difficult to focus their attention or read several text lines? If so, this collection is what you need.

It is perfect for anyone who has been a poetry lover and features excerpts from classic poems composed by some of the greatest poets. Some include Emily Dickinson, Sir Walter Ralegh, William Blake, and Henry W. Longfellow.

The nature poems are presented in a spacious and attractive format, and they feature beautiful photographs that will promote sharing and discussions. The evocative illustrations match each poem to trigger reminiscence and recollections. An adult education author has carefully selected the poems, and they also have input from an Assisted Living and Dementia Lifestyle Coordinator.

This illustrated poetry book has been curated well enough to make it a competent therapy tool or gift for anybody who suffers from mild cognitive impairment, difficulty regaining reading skills, following a stroke attack, patients in hospitals, and those living in aged care. It is an anthology that will resonate with those with an in-depth Divine sense and personal faith in everyday living.

Earth Room, by Rachel Manheimer (2022)

Earth Room is Rachel’s debut and a dazzling collection of poems exploring how love and art merge to mold someone’s life. The book will transport every reader across decades and on a journey from the moon to Mars. All the while, you will also pass by Berlin, Alaska, and the Hudson Valley.

Nobel Laureate Louise Glück selected Earth Room, which revolves around a sculpture lineage, performance, and land art showcased by Pina Bausch and Robert Smithson. The book also features observations that have been shaped by our environment and gender, history, and signs of the apocalypse.

Rachel has used a compelling, direct, and consequential voice to test the thin line between culture and nature, routine life, and performance. This book is a work of art and calls for us to reinforce sincerity. It is original and will help you with lessons on creating something out of where you are in life.

Zoom Rooms, by Mary Jo Salter (2022)

Zoom Rooms is a timely poetry book that will be timeless about the historical moment we live in today. In the book, Mary talks about the strangeness of how we are currently existing and the constants we have to endure every day.

The title poem features several sonnet-sized zoom meetings for a memorial service, a classroom setting, and an encounter with a new family baby. You will find an artistic representation and humor to reflect this age of technology-induced proximity and social distance. Through the poems, you will see how imagination can collapse space and time.

The “Island Diaries” section has input that exudes Robinson’s earlier century Crusoe and Shakespeare’s Prospero meet-up. There are poems that use objects like a hot water bottle and a silk blouse to help you meditate, and Mary’s focus here is to address the human need for consolation and healing.

Our paradoxical communal and solitary experiences have also been voiced in this book’s poems about art. Some of the illustrations featured here are a photograph by Walker Evans and a gilded Giotto altarpiece.

The poems in Zoom Rooms are impeccably beautiful and well thought out, and Mary uses them to direct us on moments we may miss. She reminds us that being alert is one of the ways through which we can have gratitude.

Poems for the Signs, by Michaela Angemeer (2022)

Poems for the Signs is a collection that profoundly explores the twelve astrological signs. It begins with Aries and ends with Pisces. This collection talks about self-reflection, love, and depression.

When you think about the various signs, you will think of somebody you love and embody Michaela’s words. The book also has expressions about healing ancestral spirits, how to find beauty by being alone, and getting ready to take on the world.

The themes of astrology are well illustrated, and they will help readers in finding themselves, dating matters, and dealing with family issues. Anyone hit by intense grief and loss will also find helpful input.

At its core, this poem collection asks readers to look deeply at all their parts and show them a little more love. You will connect with it so well that the experience may be a little emotional. The poems may make you laugh or shed some tears, but you surely will go into a deep reflection mode.

Poems for the Signs is a motivational, illustrated poetry book and a therapy tool for everyday life. You can get it as a gift for anyone who is building their growth journey or an astrology lover.

The Shift, by Melody Godfred (2022)

We say that the world has changed but so have we. This poem collection is meant to help us embody who we currently are. It will reframe how you see and navigate the post-pandemic world.

Each poem is an inspiration for us to shift from our old thinking ways and get into new perspectives. It encourages us to do away with guilt and go toward being more grateful, to come out of resistance and mold a surrendering spirit, and to love instead of being constantly in fear. To illustrate the messages in this illustrated poetry book, Melody has written the poems in pairs. The left side represents the old ways we need to shift from. The right side gives a perspective shift that illuminates what we should embrace or the new things we should lovingly bring into our lives.

The poems are simple, but they will instantly elicit a profound reset. The accompanying line drawings will awaken your mind and heart powerfully. The pairings are a unique writing style for offering a hopeful salve to a burned-out soul. They will make excellent companions and help you bravely navigate what lies ahead or the unknown.

Changing with the Tides, by Shelby Leigh (2022)

Shelby presents an inspirational and moving poetry collection regarding the growth and embracing the beautiful things life has to offer. She breaks this collection into two themes- the anchor and the sail.

Her point of view about the anchor will help you explore some of the life issues we view negatively, like anxiety, heartbreak, and insecurity. On the other hand, the sail focuses and depicts how following all these storms of life, we can heal and become hopeful. In this evocative and celebratory collection, Shelby emphasizes self-empowerment.

Changing with the Tides is a must-read if you want to follow the dreams of your heart and embrace your authentic self. It will hit home, get right into your feelings, and feel very relatable, reminding you that you are not alone and all situations improve. You only have to keep pushing and remain strong.

The book will speak to you if you have ever doubted yourself or your worth, primarily due to ugly beginnings. Get help through this book and connect with all matters of your heart and soul.

A Hundred Lovers, by Richie Hofman (2022)

A Hundred Lovers features short lyrics that have been merged to discuss geography, sculpture, painting and classical music in a manner that says love is immortal. The collection is a catalog of frank, steamy, and sublime encounters.

French autofiction has inspired the book to make the poems feel diaristic and sharp, and the lyrical writing presents readers with everyday scenes and imbues them with sex. The poems explore promiscuity and violence, risk and appetite, and also feature reflections on monogamy and desire. Richie invites readers to think about pleasurable and painful memories and leaves an open forum for filling in the generous white spaces between the magnetic lines.

The poems are crackled with vows and disavowals, and they are filled with elegant and keen imagery that reminds us that the flesh is just as curious as the mind. You will take the poems in this book into your body’s feelings to seek out a connection if an unassailable self-singleness haunts you. They will channel a sensibility that will make tradition astoundingly new.

Reverie, by Vera Atieno (2022)

Reverie is a definitive poem collection that explores nature, love, depression, and self-discovery themes. It also talks about beginnings and ends and the experience we get from leaning on and counting our fantasies and dreams. The book is a quartet, and its main sections are Cosmos, Misgivings, Musings, and Soft Spot. They will guide your thoughts and help you focus on the read.

Each section is distinct and spirals through disconnected but persuasive themes. Walking through Reverie will feel like taking a walk through a daydream and eventually getting lost in it. Each poem is highly impactful with personal and powerful diction. You will see the author in all the pieces.

Vera’s choice of words is powerful and will paint a gorgeous picture regardless of the theme she is communicating. The imagery and symbolism used throughout the book are beautifully crafted, and the mini illustrations are attention-grabbing. You will feel Vera’s experience as you read through every page.

Earthbound Journeys, by S.V. Brosius (2022)

This illustrated edition is for anyone who seeks to embrace the depth and power of their feminine feeling. The collection has moving pieces written to be a source of encouragement and inspiration for the heart. It also has input that will bring out a tremendous awakening of your soul.

Earthbound Journeys will assist you in reflecting on the life moments you most treasure. Every topic in this book will allow you to walk in a realm of emotions, and you will appreciate the writing even more. Some topics explored include motherhood, life and introspection, and romance. You will also get into a reflective side about nature and otherworldly places, loss, grief, and faith.

The musings are meant to inspire hope, make you get into an imaginative world, and love better. You will appreciate the colorful and beautiful illustrations that make you get deeper into your thoughts and reflective process.

Final Thoughts on the best Illustrated Poetry Books

Growing up, I was always drawn to the mesmerizing world of colors, strokes, and lines, often losing myself in the intricate illustrations of the books I read. My grandmother, a wise old soul, saw my fascination and presented me with a beautiful poetry book one day. It was unlike any I'd seen before, adorned with exquisite illustrations that danced alongside the verses.

I remember one evening, sitting with that book on the porch as the sun set, the words of a poem about love and loss echoed in my mind. Next to the poem was a stunning illustration of a solitary tree, its branches stark against a crimson backdrop. I could feel the intense emotions the tree depicted – the barren branches resonated with loss, while the fiery sky seemed to speak of a love that was once vibrant.

As I delved deeper into the poem, the illustration came alive, and I began to understand the profound connection between the written word and visual art. The artist had captured the essence of the poem, guiding my emotions and helping me to see and feel what the poet had envisioned. The image didn’t just support the text, it enriched it, making the emotions more palpable and the experience more intimate.

Whenever I felt puzzled by a poem's intricate layers, the illustrations acted as my guide, bridging the gap between the abstract and the tangible. They helped me navigate through the poet's world, illuminating subtle nuances and amplifying the depth of the verses.

This experience taught me that art and poetry are not separate entities but are closely intertwined, each enhancing the other's beauty and meaning. Just as a poet weaves words to create imagery, an artist paints pictures that evoke emotions, making them two sides of the same coin.

Experiments in Human and AI Artistry

This is a mixed-genre book ranging from sci-fi short stories to poetry to food and beverage recipes to essays and debates.

The main hook, though, is that half of the material is written by humans, and half by AI. The names are removed and placed at the back of the book in an answer key. Readers have to guess — if they can! — which stories, poems, recipes etc. are penned by humans, and which by AI. Also, see if AI can convincingly imitate human art.

If a story was written by an AI instead of a human artist… could you tell?

Could you tell the difference between a poem penned by a person versus one crafted by a computer?

Prove it.

Man Versus Machine is among the first experiments offering an answer to these questions for those curious.

Join an array of artists, amateur and professional, who desire to test their skills against the emerging powers of artificial intelligence. The Embrace of Shadows

Morgana's eyes glistened beneath the moon's gaze, her allure as dark as the shadowed depths of Camelot's corners. She turned her gaze to Edmund, a knight of the Round Table, his loyalty to King Arthur as evident as the moon in the night sky.

“Edmund,” she whispered, her voice silken against the rustle of leaves. “Why do you keep a distance when your heart yearns to be close?”

Edmund averted his gaze, attempting to hide the turmoil within his chest. “I am a knight, Morgana,” he replied, his voice gruff. “Sworn to serve Arthur, not to indulge in whims of the heart.”

Her laughter, melodious yet haunting, echoed around them. “And what if your heart commands you to serve differently?” she questioned, her hand reaching to caress his armored cheek. His eyes betrayed him, revealing the conflict that raged within him. He was a knight, yes, but a man first.

In the battlefields that stretched beyond Camelot's walls, Edmund fought with a new fervor. Every thrust of his blade, every dodge of his opponent's attack, was not for the glory of King Arthur, but for the love that was blossoming within his heart. The passion that consumed him reflected in his battles, his fury and might turning him into a formidable foe.

His adversaries fell one by one, their defeat echoing his inner turmoil. “For the love that dare not speak its name,” he muttered under his breath, driving his sword deeper into the enemy lines. The battlefield turned into a stage for his internal conflict, his loyalty clashing with his newfound passion, painting a grisly tableau of love and betrayal.

One evening, under the star-studded sky, their secret was sealed with a kiss. Morgana’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears as she pulled away, her voice trembling. “We tread a dangerous path, Edmund.”

“I know,” he admitted, his voice barely a whisper. His hand found hers, their fingers intertwining. “But it's a path I'm willing to tread, for you.”

Edmund found himself walking on a perilous line, his nights filled with clandestine meetings and his days consumed by bloody battles. Every stolen moment with Morgana was a sweet poison, the taste of betrayal bitter on his tongue but the exhilaration far too intoxicating to resist.

I want you to think of your heart as a treasure chest. Inside, you've got countless gems and trinkets; each one represents a bit of your love, your dreams, your hopes, and who you are. You know, some people might rush and give their treasures away, but remember, not everyone will cherish them as they deserve. But here's the thing – the “right person” for you? They'll see the worth of your heart's treasure even when it’s buried deep.

There's something enchanting about love, isn't there? You feel like a ship in the midst of a mighty storm one moment and floating on a peaceful sea the next. It's full of mysteries, surprises, and sometimes, it can give you a fair share of boo-boos. I know it's hard when your heart feels like it's taken a tumble. But, let me tell you something important: these little stumbles, they're not there to make you give up on love. They're there to prepare you for something more significant, something truly beautiful.

Love isn't just about fluttery feelings or getting butterflies in your stomach when that special someone smiles at you. Sure, those are sweet moments, but love is more. It's about feeling cherished for who you are, not having to put on a mask or pretend to be someone else. The right person will embrace all of you – your quirks, your strengths, your weaknesses, and everything in between. They will love you for being you, plain and simple.

And guess what? You won’t have to do somersaults to make them stay. No, you won't have to change your favourite colour or pretend to like a band that doesn't even make your toes tap. You'll find that with the right person, love isn't about giving up a part of you. Instead, it's about growing, evolving together, side by side.

Now, I want to tell you this – you don't need to rush. Just like you can't force a flower to bloom before its time, you can't force love either. It might feel like everyone else has found their ‘right person', while you're still trying to decipher the map to your own love story. But remember, not all adventures are meant to start at the same time. Some are late bloomers, and that's okay. It doesn’t make the journey any less beautiful or worthwhile.

Have you ever watched a sunrise? You see, the sky doesn't light up all at once. It starts with a faint glow, slowly taking over the darkness, until, before you know it, the whole sky is ablaze with colours. Love can be a lot like that sunrise. It doesn't always have to be a lightning bolt moment. It can be a slow, steady glow that brightens your life bit by bit. And trust me, when it's the right person, it's worth the wait.

Maybe you've been hurt, maybe you're feeling a little lost, and that's alright. It's okay to feel down, to let your heart heal. Just remember not to build a wall around your heart's treasure chest. Keep it open, keep it hopeful. Your past experiences, they're not roadblocks, they're stepping stones, guiding you towards the love you deserve.

The journey to find the right person might seem long. At times, it might even feel like a wild goose chase. But one day, when you least expect it, you'll stumble upon someone who will see the sparkle in your eyes and the worth of your heart. They won't just stick around for the sunny days, but also for the stormy ones, always holding your hand, making you feel cherished and loved for being just you.

So, remember, keep your head high, keep that heart open, and most importantly, keep being you. Your story of love, just like any good tale, needs its time to unfold. The right person, the one who will love all your perfect imperfections, they're out there, and one day, they're going to walk into your life. And when they do, you'll know that every stumble, every wait was worth it. Keep the faith. You've got this.

The end of a busy day has come;
the sun is sinking deep.
It’s time for little eyes to close,
for little children to sleep.

The birds nestle quietly in the trees
to rest for the day ahead,
and for little ones in their houses,
it’s time to get ready for bed…

to put aside their toys and games
until another day,
to wash off all the dust and dirt
that gathered during play,

to brush their teeth
until each one is fully cleaned and white,
and put on soft pajamas.
It’s time to say, “Goodnight!”

Excerpt from Healing Grace © Copyright 2023 Michelle G. Stradford

There are times when the hurting rushes in too fast
for our shattered hearts to contain.

The heightened level of pain proves too vast
for our hollowed words to name.

Hollowed

Long after swallowing the biting hurt,
I choke on the aftertaste of regret.
Searing moments come roaring back,
refusing to allow me to forget.

I gulp down glasses of bitter lies,
then pack my gaping wounds
with merciless vows
and fistfuls of defiance.

Denial is key to my survival.

Coping

Prolonging your agony for someone
who does not see or feel you,
nor believe you are worth their trouble,
will never evoke enough joy
to justify your pain and struggle.

Your Agony

Each desperate hour
stumbles over the next
while time collapses.
I gasp for another breath,
lungs drunk from racing,
competing with myself.

Wrestling, then chasing,
I am defeating these demons
at their rigged life test
before my sun is ready to set.
My heart will beat life into me
until not one dream is left.
